Greatly appreciate the offer. I have only PVC in the entire house and I think you are all copper so I'm guessing I can't use any of it. I did need a 3/4 PVC coupling, but I used a T with a stub and cap in place of it, until I determine what my long term solution will be to prevent this from happening again. I'm tempted to build a doghouse around the water inlet and open it up to the garage. Ripple effect of all this is that all the cans of spray paint or house paint I had in garage are probably shot. Maybe brake fluid and bug spray too. |

Most all of this stuff will be flipped (at cost) to my neighbor who's a plumber, I just had internet before him so ordered what I could. I do not intend to profit from any of this, just hopefully can help some neighbors out. |

I got an estimate to retrofit my entire place with PEX and it was $3400.00. Not bad in my opinion. |

A few years back we had to replace our main water line due to a leak in the middle of summer. Found out the asshat builder used the black PVC tubing which is not for code. When the ground settled over the years the pipe first flexed in the yard and then where it came thru the foundation.
We replaced it with PEX piping and are very thankful we did. |

They replaced alot of that grey piping around here under mfg warranty from a huge settlement. One level one day to put new in. They didn't remove the old either just ran new along side of it. New holes in floor for toilets with old still in walls, just something to think about as to me looked bad. |

Our little burg lifted their boil water order this morning. Temps near 60 and food on the grocery shelves again.
Waiting a day or two to assess damage to pool equipment. Some PVC damage evident.... Water level in pool looks normal which is a relief as some near have have reported cracks from expanding ice. |

We just had to have our place replumbed with PEX. Ran almost 6K but this is a two story, 3.5 baths, kitchen sink, washing machine, 3 outside bibs replaced and new shut off valve. Took two guys the better part of a week.
We had two different plumbers (besides the company we picked to do the work) plus an AC tech tell us that the existing plumbing material no longer met code and that due to the age of the house it was likely we would see it starting to crack and split soon. |

You know, that's what I thought - and still do, but my son has friends in a neighborhood a few minutes north of me and some of their neighbors had cracked pools. I couldn't confirm but decided to go around the pool and break up the ice after I lost the pump. The ice was over 3 inches thick in places. It doesn't seem reasonable that the pool could crack, but homeowners policies here don't usually cover pool damage. Did this three consecutive days.
Our power was never off long enough for the equipment to freeze except I forgot that my pool sweep runs off a separate pump and is set to only run for a couple hours a day. When I set the pool to run continuously I didn't think about the sweep. I think I would have been fine had I thought to take 10 seconds to set that pump on continuous. When I discovered the burst PVC, I shut the pool down and drained the filter and pumps. The pool froze quickly after that. If the pump isn't busted, it should be an easy fix. |

About half way down the page What is the Expansive Force of Freezing Water? Frozen copper water line shows freeze stresses (C) Daniel Friedman How much does water expand or contract as a function of temperature and how much does ice expand? Various sources give different expansion forces for freezing ice. Depending on its state, freezing water (or ice as temperatures continue to drop) can expand by as much as nine percent at a maximum force between about 25,000 and 114,000 psi. |

If y’all know anyone who needs food or water on the NW side of the DFW metroplex, the local mobile Ribs guy (Willie's Q-Shack) traveled down from Cedar Rapids and will be cooking. Last I heard he was at the Ramada parking lot at the intersection of Regal Road and I-35.
There's clothing and other stuff to. I donated a few things and sent some money with him. When Cedar Rapids had the big derecho storm in August he drove all over town cooking for people and gave away tons of food. |

Wow... I just hope the 9% followed the path of least resistance and expanded up and not out. I should know more in a day or two as the temps the next few days are forecast to be in the high 50s to high 60s. Thanks for posting this. |
