Sorry about all that shrapnel That wreaks havoc on bearings among other things.

That little crate motor you were talking about sounds like a good option. Hard to beat a good build backed by a warranty.
I've had plenty of shoddy work come back from "good shops". Heads that were incorrectly milled, damaged cam lobes and incorrect sizes on everything from pistons and rings.

the dipstick passes through it.

it looks like it should just pop straight down, but it won't budge.

windage tray, it stops the crank from churning up the oil.

It should pull right off once the nuts are removed.

If you are going with a new short or long block, you can FUBAR the tray, your new engine will come with a new tray.

Yep, spun bearing. You can bet the pieces from it has gotten to every rod & main journal too so I would say there is no need for further disassembly. The crank is probably too far gone to be turned and all the rods would need to be resized, then with that many miles it may need to have a bore cleanup of .030 which means new pistons. It's all your decision now, brand new or good used. If you plan on keeping the car a long time then a new engine would probably be your best option. If you don't plan on keeping it then a good used would be my choice. I wish you luck.
