Default What sayeth VBPR&C?

I was watching CNBC this morning and in in the general vein of the health care system they mentioned the shortage of organs available for transplant and suggested that instead of an "opt-in" system wherein you have to state your intention to be an organ donor, an "opt-out" system in use in Spain would greatly increase the available organ supply.

I like the idea, and was wondering what the collective wisdom here says.

Until there's fewer stories about people who could be saved being put on ice for organ harvesting, I'll keep my organs where they should be. Being an organ donor basically incentives the doctors to declare you dead and give up on you.

Well it's an interesting idea. But that would mean they have a right to your body unless you tell them no. It's a slippery slope I don't think we should go down personally.

I do wish we could come up with something though. I've never been a donor but I'm going to become one. when you have a family member that needs a transplant it changes your perspective.

But I'm not sure if I would have anything useful. But if they want it, they can have it I guess.

Sorry, we must have lost the paperwork regarding your loved one's donor status...

I'll take my organs to the grave with me. I don't need the .gov telling my family that they own my carcass after i die. Hell, the .gov already owns my property after I die and taxes the shit out of it again. They don't need anything more from me.

I would like to see some of those. I spent a month on a transplant team when I was in med school and the people on the "donor" side as far as staffing goes typically are not even a part of the process. A kid comes in with a through-and-through gunshot wound to the head, there's not a lot of wiggle room about whether or not he is going to die. It is usually a clear cut decision and his status as an organ donor is typically only asked after the conclusion is foregone (And, not to mention, occaisionally forgotten about entirely.)

Do you have any of those stories I could see?

I like it but if they did that Fox News and the rest of the crazies would be telling everyone that Obama now owns your organs.

Rednecks would be tattooing "Not an organ donor" on their chest.

So what's your problem with the anti-abortion crowd then? One and the same, telling people they don't own and control their own bodies.

Also if your mindset is thinking not of the donor, but of the life that could be saved, guess what --- same with anti-abortion crowd. Their concern is actually saving the life of the innocent child.

I've got people on VBOT to annoy.
Actually when you die they do ask your survivors if you will allow them to be a donor.

They did with my Mom.

They kept us waiting in the waiting room for over an hour before they even came and talked to us because they were waiting to hear back from some transplant team or agency, to coordinate if we allowed.

I went off on them like a momma bear protecting her cubs and told them to do their paperwork so we could my Mom the hell out of there.

Pissed me off to no end. All they had to do was communicate as to what was going on but they were more concerned with other things.

I also ask them, what could a 74 year woman with bad eyes, bad ears, bad heart and an infection throughout her body possibly have to donate? They said nothing really. And yet you left us out here for an hour anyway.
