Default I'm an idiot...

Came home from Wednesday golf league. My wife likes it when I set our alarm when I leave for that since she doesn't get home for about 1.5 hours after I leave, and that makes her happy. So I set the alarm.

I get back and she's not here yet. I'm a bit miffed because I'm hungry, and she was going to have dinner ready. No big deal, she said something about possibly being late. I go to type the code in the dark kitchen with my sunglasses on and mess it up. No biggy, I reenter it and it works.

She comes home, goes outside, and all is well. Then the doorbell rings. Twice. Annoyed, I go to answer it. Trying to make dinner here. It's a cop. Well, OK. I answer the door, she asks if I'm the homeowner. Uh, yes. Do you have an ID? Uh, crap, took my wallet out in my office a minute ago. Be right back.

She backed up into the yard when I got back with my wallet and showed my ID. Turns out when I entered the code the second time, it was my panic code. Which I didn't even know, it's been over a year since I changed it. To my PIN number. Which is really dumb because when you aren't thinking straight, you can just enter that and the alarm seems to be happy with it but the cops still show up.

So, that is changed now. Also, the cop let me leave for 20 seconds to get my wallet. I could have armed myself. I'm honestly not sure how she could have handled it better, at least she did back up about 10 feet when I came back.

Here's your sign

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When my late Dad & stepmom still lived in PA, I went to feed the cats for them. I knew the alarm code was their anniversary but wasn't sure if it was backwards or forward.
I unlocked the door, entered the "correct" code and got a green light. Fed the cat and took a leak. I re-entered the code and as I locked the door, I saw a police car two houses up. Oh shit.
I waved, as I walked down the driveway got out my wallet and held it in front of me. The cop pulled forward and as I introduced myself as Ron's son, the alarm company radioed the police and I was one of the "allowed" persons.
Here's my sign
Since it's the panic code, everything looks fine when it's entered.......
Except the police show up and want to talk
Not quite. The regular code and the panic code were two meaningful numbers to me. In this instance, the panic code was my bank PIN, which is something I use quite often. So when I messed up entering the code the first time, I just pressed some number a couple more times so that it would ask again (it was dark in the kitchen and I had my sunglasses on still) and I then just absent-minded entered my PIN number. The system said "Alarm Off" and I didn't think another thing about it until the police showed up actually fairly quickly (within about 10 minutes.) Between the time I got home and the cops showed up, my wife came home, parked in the garage, said hi to me in my office, and went out back to water some plants. She didn't even know the cops showed up until I told her.
I have now changed the panic code to a different meaningful number that I'm not likely to enter by accident out of habit (hopefully...)
although its always up to the customer, i try to discourage them from picking out there own panic codes for this very reason. in an actual duress situation, the mind does funny things.
we encourage a code of 2580 for the panic, and try to get everyone in the household to just remember straight down the middle.
