Getting Settled in
The journey is finally coming to an end. We closed on our house last Thursday and I rented a car to drive home to pick up the van, dogs and have the wife follow me back.
We left out on Friday morning and made the trip to Marion IA in about 8 hours total. We stopped in a great place in Missouri which had a dog park. Let the dogs play for a few minutes before loading them back up and heading the rest of the way home. Our household goods got delayed a day so they delivered them on Sunday. A little over three hours to unload the van and put everything in the house. The past week has been crazy with getting internet, TV, Phones and everything else settled in. We are rocking the internet with 1GB service right now, streaming two big TV's and enjoying some AC while unpacking. I about have the garage staged so both vehicles and the trailer will be in there. The previous owners did not clean the house prior to moving out. They did not finish packing out until 3 in the morning on closing day. We had to throw out the stove it was so bad. The Lowe's delivery people said it won the worse stove they have ever seen. |

From what I remember on my last move-in 39 years ago, what a relief.
Good luck, glad you have the moving anxiety behind you. |

Congrats on moving into your new home.
Sorry but I will not be able to come to your housewarming party. It's a tad too far to travel. |

Last year I got some quotes to move 2000SF worth of HHG from CA to KY and the bids came in around $30,000. For that kind of money I would rather sell/donate everything at one end and buy all new stuff at the other. |

As a final thanks to the nutjob neighbor, did you fling dog shit onto the side of his house with a shovel right as you left? |

That's because the moving trucks have to drive back to Kalifornia empty. You're paying for milage both ways. No one in their right mind would move TO Kalifornia.

Not sure on the moving expense, it was part of the job offer with relocation. we had about 16K of household goods to move.

Pics will be forthcoming this week. The place is still a shambles from moving in and also trying to clean up from the previous owners. Did find out from the selling agent, the house was custom built back in 2001. From the finishes inside you can see there was a lot of thought and attention put into the house. The original owner had approached the agent about 5 months ago and asked if the owners would sell the house back to him, he was recently widowed and wanted to downsize from the larger house they bought. At the time the owners didn't think about moving, then she got a job offer in Oregon.

aren't walkthrough's required on closing day to avoid the mess disaster they left you? contractually here in NY/NJ the previous owner has to leave the house broom clean.
congrats on the new digs! |

They are supposed to clean. They didn't finish packing out until 3 AM and we did not want to chance screwing up closing. I was driving back to Indiana to pick up the van and dogs. We then took off with the wife following for the 8 hour trip to IA. They were kind enough to leave us some cash to clean the house, not worth it but it is our house now!!
