Interesting side story...

Dao was arrested in 2003 after being accused of trading prescription drugs for sexual favors from a male patient he later hired. He denied paying for sex, but was charged with 98 felony drug counts for illegally prescribing and trafficking painkillers, including hydrocodone, Oxycontin and Percocet.

The Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure says Dao was convicted of multiple felonies in 2004 and was placed on five years supervised probation in early 2005. He surrendered his medical license a month later.

Dao was allowed to continue practicing medicine again in 2015 under limited conditions. He and his wife, Teresa, have an office together in Elizabethtown.

TMZ reports the medical board imposed more restrictions last year, only allowing him to practice internal medicine in an outpatient facility one day a week. A doctor said Dao had interpersonal problems and would often "unilaterally choose to do his own thing."

He saw the opportunity to bait United into a some poor decisions and they stupidly took it. United will likely settle with the guy just to get this to go away.

Anyone who thinks United is going to feel any more than a slight temporary pinch about this doesn't have a clue. This incident will be forgotten by week's end and all these self-appointed moral compasses will have moved on to pass judgment about some other social media event that has nothing to do with them.

And aside from the fact that United shouldn't have allowed him to board the plane to begin with, the rest of this incident has nothing to do with "customer service." Businesses are forced to put up with asshat customers far too often. They act like complete douchebags, make unreasonable requests and demands, and when the company refuses to accommodate them, they start crying about how unfair the company is and somehow it becomes the company's fault. Bullshit. The second this guy refused to obey the directions of United, he was in violation of his contract with the airline and was at that point trespassing on their property. HE escalated the situation and brought this on himself.

And business are run by humans and make mistakes. I'm sure the gate and flight crew didn't get up in the morning with the intent of making someone's day miserable. But not all mistakes are of a gravity that requires the company to genuflect to the customer or offer compensation (even though it was offered AND eventually accepted). People need to buck up a little and be satisfied with "We're sorry, an error was made, but this is how things have to work."

I'm not a shill for big business by any means, but there comes a point where you have to stop pandering to every crybaby who's looking to be a YouTube celebrity and get a cash payout.

who he is, what he holds in his hand, how much he paid, where he is going, and everything else related to this case are immaterial. he was given an order to get off the plane. once by the crew, once by the police. they don't have to have a reason to remove you. if you are told to get off the plane, you GET OFF THE PLANE!

you can debate it later, sue them (unsuccessfully), make your case in the news. but that plane is not taking off with you on it.

failure to follow crew orders is itself a crime, so he was never in the right, he was always in the wrong. still is. any harm that came to him was his own fault.

I'd politely decline the cart guy. When 3 armed cops show up to escort me back to the store, I'm going to accept their offer. There is one big difference between the flight crew and the cart guy. The flight crew has federal law behind them. I'm required to obey the flight crew by law. As far as I know, there is no federal law insisting that I follow the orders of the cart guy.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that one. He has hired two shooter attorneys to handle whatever case he may have. Contrary to popular belief, it isn't all that easy to hire a top gun attorney or their firm to take your case if it has questionable merit. They must see something glaring obvious that United did wrong. I'm not an attorney but my first guess would be that United didn't follow their contract of carriage when it comes to bumping passengers.
