Laws and Customs
so i stopped at the grocery store yesterday, on the way home from other errands, park near the far end of the lot (my big truck is hard to turn into a single parking spot, this let me just pull into one that was open on both sides), and i see a pair of carts one spot away on an island. cool, i'll grab that one.
mask up, per the posted rules of the store, get my stuffs, and drive the cart back to my truck to offload. everyone i saw was dutifully wearing their masks, but a clerk/bag boy was out in the lot gathering stray carts. i unload, and take the cart back to a nearby cart corral. it struck me that everyone was wearing their little mask, but very few were taking their carts back to the numerous cart corrals. first one is the local rule/law, the second one is a polite custom, that few do. |

1. The wearing of masks is NOT A LAW.
2. People who don't return their carts to the corral are lower than internet trolls. |

I unload my cart into the back of my truck then give it a hard shove at the most expensive vehicle within my range.

Maybe once a week I go pick my favorites from the grocery......they have the carts chained together so a quarter is needed to unlock your cart.....and so I wheel my cart out with my crap in the bags.....AND just plug my cart in backward or sideways to get my crap outta the cart and make it simpler on the next guy if he has any crap to get into the cart....simplify the efforts.....

People not returning their carts is one of my pet peeves, compounded by the fact that so many people around Houston are 3rd World, so they steal the carts, dump them in drainage ditches and bayous, use them for BBQ grills, and of course no self respecting homeless person would not have a couple of stolen carts.
I really like the European method, as used by Aldi, and described by Gene. For a refundable quarter per shopper, all of that shopping cart BS can be solved. Even if someone is in a hurry, or it's raining and ditches the cart they rented for a quarter, somebody else is gonna grab it. Their parking lots are waaaay cleaner than any other grocery store. |

My wife does the shopping while I cower at home. I'm wearing a mask right now in my office, alone. And a face shield. Also goggles. Can't be too careful.

Grocery carts always remind me of a story or two...
Wife was driving my 78 Chebby PU to work one morning (lifted somewhat so sat high) and lights were off in the parking lot she rolled into(4am) at I figure 40mph or so and found an unsuspecting cart with the frt fender... Made it into a soda can, decent dent in fender corner but I'll give the Maaco paint job an A+ as it hardly cracked the paint and never flaked off all those years it we owned it. I actually got an apology for that one. Years before that I was sitting in a parking lot (corner lot) waiting for her to get off work, lights in lot were off when..... waaaaa.... waaaa SMASH.... dude smoked concrete filled pole with handicap sign on it at 30 or so in an Yota PU. I was concerned until he started yelling and screaming.. It's not even my truck. Laughed so hard and even more when found out he had to pay for the pole he hit. Anyway... People are lazy that won't push a cart a few feet and secure it. |

When I was in California last year it looked like hardly anybody put carts back. Saw that in several shopping centers.

Why would someone NOT return the cart? I enjoy that "run and jump" ride back to the store. It brings out the kid in me.

actually, as a logistical thing, just a small slotted blocked off drop off point in the lots to 'return' and pick up a cart would be much nicer....I WOULD THINK, but I don't see any clear marked efforts on any store's parking lots..... hate to think every kusstomer was a sloppy pig..... |
