Mother, son killed by woman's grandson, deputies say

SALTERS, SC (WCSC) - Williamsburg County sheriff's deputies say a mother and her son were killed by the woman's grandson Monday morning.

Anthony Anderson was arrested and charged with murder after turning himself in to the Horry County Sheriff's Office Monday. Anderson was charged for his alleged role in the murder of his grandmother and uncle who were both found lying in blood at their home.

Authorities say Anderson confessed to his mother who then convinced Anderson to surrender.

"I think his conscience might have bothered him and he turned himself in," said Williamsburg County Sheriff Michael Johnson.

Deputies responded to 100 Deward Avenue after a 911 call was received from a male subject asking for help. The male told the dispatcher that "they needed help," but then the phone was disconnected.

Deputies arrived at the residence and noticed an open window. After calling inside for a response, they heard someone yell "Help me." Officers entered the home through the window and found a male lying in on the floor in a pool of blood.

The male, identified as 52-year-old Theward McCray, told deputies what happened before he was transported by EMS to MUSC where he later died.

Deputies also found 89-year-old Rosa Lee McCray lying in blood on a bed in the next room. She was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were killed by gunshot wounds.

"All these are bullet holes that hit the bed," said family member Ida Robinson.

Investigators say McCray led them to the suspect. He gave a dying declaration, naming the man who allegedly gunned down him and his mother.

Authorities say Anderson is the grandson of victim Rosa McCray and the nephew of Theward McCray. Investigators think the deadly shootings were sparked by an earlier argument.

Fulton says autopsies were planned Monday.
