Man steals underwear, arrested while praying

ELYRIA, OH - Elyria police arrested a 24-year-old man inside a church after he apparently stole underwear from a Family Dollar early Sunday evening.

According to a police report, the male, Marques Jeter stated that he was upset because an employee "came at him" so he ran out of the store without paying for the packages of underwear. After fleeing the store, Jeter fled towards Lowell Street.

Officers made contact with someone at the front door of the United Church of Christ Church who stated that a Narcotics Anonymous meeting was being held at the church. The witness says a black male had just arrived at the church shortly before officers and ran quickly to the basement.

The officers then entered the basement where the meeting was being held and observed the suspect laying on the floor face down and praying in an "unintelligible manner."

Jeter appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and possibly other substances. He was irrational and displayed several verbal and physical danger cues towards officers as well as yelling obscenities.

Jeter has been arrested earlier in the day for stealing diapers from the Rite-Aid on Broad Street.
