Never said it was, but there were other guns in play and things were murky a day or so after this happened. It's much more clear now what actually occurred. It took at least two days, for instance, to find out that Kyle didn't even fire the first shots.

I got my ccw license right at the beginning of the Wu flu hysteria, but I don't actually carry a gun. Maybe I've always been naive, but I never really worried about my safety and usually tried to stay out of dangerous situations. After seeing what's going on these days, though, I have started carrying a knife, a Buck 110, and if things get worse, I may indeed start carrying, though I'm not sure how that will work in practice. I'm a contractor, so I'm outside a lot, in plants, where it's prohibited, and on PPL's. The problem is, I sweat like a whore in church. I figure I'd rust out anything I carry in the Summer within a few weeks. And the problem in Houston with having a 'truck gun' is, you have to worry about having your truck broken into in some areas. I had that happen probably 30 years ago in Houston while out night clubbing.

That's a real concern and you seem to at least recognize the limitation that is inherent with being armed. Everyone must assess their risk and arm/act accordingly. That said, if you are out in areas that are a bit sketch more than a few times a year, consider getting a bit more protection.

I'm sure I'd carry too if I had dealt with that. Where did that stuff happen?

My post had nothing to do with carrying a weapon. It was about having a 1 out of 2 chance of being a victim of violent crime. That just seems stupidly high to me. Perhaps I live in a bubble, but that number seems ridiculous.

My boss had a gun stolen from his truck in his driveway a few weeks back.

I wouldn't know a Glock from a Ruger but it seemed completely unnecessary to have your gun on the seat of your truck.

He was nice enough and I didn't sense any threat but as he pulled away I thought: Yeah. OK pal. You've got a gun. BFD.
Not a fan of open carry myself. As far as in a vehicle in some states (GA for example) one can carry in their vehicle without a CCW permit but it cannot be concealed and must lie in plain sight. In TN one does not need a permit to carry in a vehicle but it must be unloaded before exiting the vehicle.

And if it ever becomes possible to carry in NJ, I probably would. We live in a seemingly safe area, but one never knows, do one?
If you can't carry what's the permit for?

Living in the peoples republic of NY, and just getting a carry permit can be very hard to almost impossible and extremely easy to have revoked on a judges whim so this applies.

I use to teach this to all my pistol permit classes. "When you carry your weapon it should be so well hidden that the only way someone knows you have one is to be wanded or patted down."

My mother was in her early 20's. She was in downtown Baltimore where she worked. 2 guys jumped into her car. She always carried a 38 special. She pointed the gun in the guys face. Luckily a gentleman nearby also witnessed the events. The guys were apprehended and arrested.

So growing up with a Mom having lived through that experience, having an uncle that was a homicide detective in MD, and now married to an LEO...yea, I carry.

Hopefully I never have to blow someone's brains out, but if it comes to it.....

Obviously it does happen, I'm just skeptical about it being as high as 1 out of 2.
Maybe if you live in some shithole city, then I could see it maybe being true.

I've been the victim of a violent crime if you consider 42 stitches and nearly losing an eye violent.

When I was 16 I was a cook at a restaurant. After my shift was over I was leaving work with 2 friends who were driving me home. A man and 2 women approached us. They had been drinking in the bar next door to where I worked. The man said in a loud and obviously drunken voice. " My name is Romone, what would you like to know." One of my buddies, who were both named Dave, said "what is the meaning of life?" Romone laughed and said something to the affect of " That's what everyone would like to know". Then the next thing I know I see movement out of the corner of my eye and start to turn to look when I'm hit with a glass. The glass shatters on my upper cheek bone and cuts me pretty good. I'm kind of dazed and keep feeling something hitting me in the back of the head, its Romone punching me. I open the car door and hit him with it till he falls down. My buddy starts the car and takes me to the hospital. I'm bleeding all over his car, his center console compartment filled with blood from me leaning over it. i walk in to the hospital and the nurse is looking down, i stand there a few seconds and then say excuse me. She looks up and screams, I'm completely covered in blood. The doctors do their thing and remove the glass from my eye an face.

The police never found this guy but many people from the bar said they remembered him being loud and obnoxious. I used to drive around at night after that looking for him. I'm lucky I never found him.

I had a gun pointed at me once at a party I was attending. It was a big gathering of construction workers and a couple of us Steamfitters got into what I *thought* was a good natured discussion on work jurisdiction with a few Ironworkers. Everyone was pretty shitfaced of course. Odd thing, I don't really recall being afraid until AFTER it happened when I realized; I'd just had a gun pointed at me. Then my fear turned into anger and I wanted to clobber the ****.

To purchase. Issued by the local PD, only required for a handgun, not rifle or shotgun, IIRC.

Why do you say that?

I have not been trained to kill, but I don't have any reason to believe I wouldn't.

Don't agree with this. Many people have killed when they had to. Protecting kids, family etc... You see these stories all the time. You do what you have to do.

A very small percentage could kill someone. The other 85% would hesitate, freeze, or shit their pants.
