Synopsis...After probably the most blatantly negative campaign (from both sides) in history, the Republicans have an edge over the Democrats in both houses. However, the Tea partiers are feeling disenfranchised from their mother party because the leadership considers them a bit loony. They plan to revolt. The old timers are standing firm against Obama's choice of tie each day because... he's just wrong about everything. No exceptions, no compromise dammit. The Democrats are licking their wounds and wondering how best to distance themselves from the Lame Duck Oval office while still appearing to hew to the party line. But they will still fight the Reps tooth and nail just because they are "supposed" to. And the White House holds veto powers in sway just to ensure that gridlock remains as bad as ever.... so really who benefits from this latest bullshit change of leadership since things are likely to be even more fecked up than before the election?????

I hope not. That is not the way forward for our Nation. Any one of us here is better qualified to represent Americans than any career politician alive today. Choose any CEO of a successful company... even if they are not publicly traded or employ more than 100 people. Choose an educator because they know how to learn and adapt their style to connect with their "public" (students). Choose a housewife because she has learned how to manage a budget, a household, the kids and her husband to keep life on an even keel. Choose a banker because they understand how to manage money and actually profit from the experience. Choose anyone but a CAREER politician since the only thing they know is how to get re-elected and stay on the gravy train.

Well??? Tell me why all of you are so thrilled with the change of scenery! Educate me about the great alternate plans the party has expounded so we can all prosper and live in harmony and peace. Tell me about the new foreign policy which is to replace the current administration's sad parody. Tell me about energy independence and the grand plan for our independence from foreign oil. Tell me how we are to erase our deficit; revamp the tax code; fix the crumbling bridges and roads; tell me what is next for our great Nation... no one has yet to present me with your side of the story and I'm all ears.

If it were up to me, I would replace it with nothing. In other words, go back to what we had before that shit was enacted. Was it perfect? No, but compared to rationed socialized health care, it is preferable. |

Frustrated much?
It doesn't matter what grand plans the Republicans have. Obama can just veto them and there are not enough votes to override in most cases. So we are stuck in about the same place with nothing significant occurring. I kinda like keeping the government from making significant decisions. They are usually bad decisions. PS I think this thread is headed for the Political forum. |

To answer the question, what will change.....probably nothing, certainly not a balanced budget. The only thing I see possibly happening is that one foot of Keystone XL pipe between the US and Canada might be finally approved by Uncle Sam.
Even if every drop of refined product produced from that PPL is exported, the US and states still win by having a new, permanent, tax base. Pipelines/compressor stations/etc. are expensive assets that will generate plenty of tax revenue, especially important in rural counties where there is not much of a tax base. Forget about the temp jobs building the thing, those are fleeting......the real jobs will be those working for TransCanada and their contractors, running and maintaining the system, as well as the refinery jobs that will be "created or saved", all without one tax dollar being spent. No "Solyndra" taxpayer handouts. No, this new infrastructure will be financed with private capital. Yes, Canada will benefit, as they should. Would Coca Cola build a bottling plant in Canada and not expect to profit? Does Canada win when they do build that plant? Yep, for all the same reasons listed above. Other than that, I don't see the Pub win doing anything for me. I don't see O'Care repealed, I don't see Medicare, Part D abolished, I don't see us pulling our troops out of ME warzones where all sides hate us anyway, etc. Truly, I don't even see the US re-legalizing higher wattage incandescent light bulbs. |

With oil selling where it is, and if it is truly headed farther south Keystone makes less sense as an investment. Even if you average all the posited production costs from the sand deposits if oil sells at or near $70 there's likely no money to be made, so even if the vote is GO I suspect those private investors might just take a pass; at least for now.
And I still hope some Republican stalwart will step forward and tell us all what the master plan is now that the shouting is over. I voted a straight Libertarian ticket because I could not in good faith vote for any of the major party candidates I had to choose from. As an aside; did you realize you can vote for yourself as a write in??? |

Apparently Keystone will be a "GO". But what if Obama says "NO"? The Teas say shut the Gov down by failing to pass an extension of the budget next month. More moderate factions decry such extremism, and when Mr. McConnell was asked directly what his plan is he stated some thing to the effect of "We'll have to get back to you on that". Go, majority, go.

2) Parts of the Keystone that could be stand alone are already under construction. Those projects will be finished, and, if that all important 1 foot that crosses the border is approved, I believe that section will be built, too. And once it its built, you can't really un ring the bell. That taxable infrastructure is there, and will need to be maintained, whether tar sands oil flows through it or not. Tax revenue and jobs are created, all with private money, not your taxpayer money, a la Solyndra, or more locally, TX Governor Rick Perry's "Texas Enterprise (Slush) Fund." If the ppl runs through your county or state, you will benefit from increased property taxes, paid by TransCanada, and your community will benefit from the money their employees and contractors spend in the local economy. ....and when TransCanada moves into the neighborhood, they aren't sending their kids to public schools, so they pay copious amounts of school tax, but never get a direct benefit. Who gets that benefit? The people who have kids in public school. Edit: I can't figure out how the Dems now allowing this to go forward even helps LA Senator Landrieu. The pipeline doesn't cross into LA. It will terminate in Texas....in Port Arthur, and a lateral to Houston. LA won't directly benefit from property taxes or new jobs. How has no one in the press pointed that out? Last edited by Bill; 11-15-2014 at 10:39am. |
