It's also a good choice in an RV because it's a one-pot meal.

I never thought about cooking curry while camping, but that's not a bad idea. Especially if you cut up your ingredients ahead of time.

Not to hijack my own thread, but...

Back when my daughter was younger, we used to camp up in Sedona almost every weekend...trying to get out of the Phoenix heat in the summer. One of their favorite meals was pita bread pizzas.

Pita bread, split open, put in some pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. Wrap it tightly in foil (sprayed lightly with a little non-stick cooking spray) and throw it near the campfire...along the outside to catch the radiant heat. Only takes a few minutes per side...you're really only trying to melt the cheese. Kids loved them.

Just made both the curry and the Katsu (with a fresh bottle of the Katsu sauce) for a new girl.

It was a smashing success.

I've tried several times now to find the pickled vegetable side item that NAV says is traditionally served with the katsu dish... to no avail. I got some angel-hair sliced cabbage from the grocery store and served it as a garnish. She ate all of it, so I guess I done good.

Sandy, thank you sincerely for posting all of this valuable information in this thread. This stuff's so good, it's getting me laid.

Ok... Making this again tomorrow for my Mom and eight of her friends.

They said this afternoon that they are bringing potato salad and other "side dishes" to go with the curry chicken.

I said, "ok!" It's not exactly going to be traditional, but it's their luncheon, and after all, they are in their seventies.

Having said that, anything I buy in Japan and bring back is obviously in Japanese. I have to scan and email the cooking directions to my my MIL so she can translate.

I brought back a bunch of toys for my nieces and nephews...these little solar robotic things that had to be put together. Thank God there were pictures because the directions for assembly were all in Japanese. My BIL sat down with the kids to put them together and was like, "WTF is this?"
The Google Translate app for Android (not sure if on iPhone) is awesome. You can take a picture of the symbols, highlight the area you want translated, and it will convert it.

Pretty cool. I used it on a joke pic once, wanted to know what it said

The girls were here for Christmas. Didn't have time to make any, so I've been tasked with bringing some boxes of curry mix with me to Tucson next time I visit. They can get S&B brand, which they like, but they definitely love the Kokumaro.

Every time I'm in an Asian grocery, I look for the Kokumaro brand. I never see it.

I might have to order some online. My curiosity is piqued.

Sandy, how would you compare the Golden Curry to the Kokumaro curry flavor?

Holy crap, I missed this question...from almost two years ago.

Golden curry is good, but the Kokumaro seems to have a deeper flavor. It reminds me more of the curry that I get in Japan. Also, I like mine a little spicier, which is why I generally get the hot version.

You can probably find the Kokumaro on Amazon.

Sandy, you've done a great service to the gaijins on the forum. I've been eating this for years, decades actually, and have yet to meet someone who doesn't like it. Even my picky ass step father in-law likes it and that's saying something. He has to eat it with egg noodles though because he thinks of rice as maggots.

A couple of comments: add button mushrooms cut in half or quarters. It ain't complete without mushrooms IMO. Use Yukon gold potatoes instead of russet. They keep their firmness and don't fall apart when boiled. Also rinsing the rice washes away starch, which is a good thing and I learned that from my mom too, but the Kokuho Rose that I buy says not to rinse because you lose nutrients (there's nutrients in white rice?). So I'm not sure on this one. If I make sushi rice, it definitely gets washed.

I've only ever done S&B. Forever. I'll have to look for that other brand. They sell S&B at our local chain market too so i don't have to make a special trip to an Asian market.

Anyway, awesome post! Never tried Indian curry, but I'm going to Denver in a few weeks and will eat at this joint I saw on diners, dives and drive-ins.

Biju's Little Curry Shop

But I thought everyone knew how to make curry.
