Isle Royale National Park
Figure I'd post this here for the regulars.
If you've never been to Isle Royale National Park, I highly suggest going there. I just got back from a week of backpacking there, and it was fantastic. For those who don't know where it is here's a map: It's technically part of Michigan, although it is geographically closer to MN and Canada. My wife and I took a ferry from Copper Harbor to Rock Harbor on the island. We backpacked on the east end of the island. We landed in Rock Harbor, and then backpacked to Daisy Farm on the first day, which is about 7 miles. Day 2 we backpacked to Lane Cove. Day 3 we went to 3 Mile and then Day 4 we went to Rock Harbor. We also hiked out to Scoville Point on Day 4. On Day 5 we did a short hike to Suzy's Cave before getting back on the ferry and heading back to Copper Harbor. Here are some pictures of the trip. From the 1st day. On the way to Daisy Farm. Sunset at Daisy Farm. View from the top of the tower on the way to Lane Cove (Mt. Ojibway). Lane Cove sunset. My wife taking a break. Morning from 3 Mile campsite. On the way out to Scoville Point. Don't touch the wasp nest. If you're not into backpacking, there is a lodge on the island with full amenities, but you only see a small part of what's to offer. I'm definitely planning on going back and backpacking the west end soon. I just need to update some of my gear, since this is my first backpacking trip in 15 years. |

Very cool trip and pics! The scenery reminds me of Whidbey Island, WA.

That's some beautiful scenery. Looks like a great time. Dunno if I told you, but we're looking into Sea Base for next summer. May have to throw your camp into the mix too.
Nice to see you back here Ted.

I see your boy is a member of OA as well. Make sure you look into some of the OA options for high adventure, including OA OA @ Sea Base, Philmont Trail Crew and Northern Tier. He'll be able to attend those events at severly reduced cost as an OA member. They all include a service component, but that's what it's all about. Also, if he's interested in working at the new National Jamboree site, there's a new National project called Summit Corps. Order of the Arrow - SummitCorps: A New River Experience I know the incident commander for the first week pretty well, so if you need more info let me know. |
