Wow. The speed difference makes it look like they steered right in to it on purpose. I notice black smoke like it's at full throttle rollin' coal.

I know what a complete loss of all power would have done in a nuclear sub, and it wasn't a pretty thing.

Look at the video in post 181. It sure looks like the pilot made a starboard turn before the power went out.

Just because the lights were still on does not mean everything was hunky-dory.

Correct. Everything went black, meaning total loss of power. The lights came back on, likely on a backup emergency generator, which wouldn't give the ship propulsion or steering. There could have been wind or strong currents pushing the ship, and the rudder may have failed in a hard turn position. Lots of things could have caused it. I've been involved in a few Root Cause Analyses for serious incidents, and the root cause is almost never what people think right after it happened.

I don’t disagree. But will we trust the investigation.
What’s to say that the power failure wasn’t sabotage to cover the poor piloting.
Maybe the helmsman knew that the starboard move was too soon and the collision was inevitable.

I agree. But it sure looks like the ship was on the west edge of the channel on the approach.

Possibly, although the channel might not be in the exact center of that bridge section. An investigation and determination of the root cause of something like this isn't easy or quick.

I would think the current would be stronger the closer you got to the center of the channel, and if the ship is 1,000 feet long, then the current at the bow must have been stronger than that at the stern. That certainly makes sense as a contributing factor.

I literally have run a boat under that bridge. And at night. And that navigation channel is freaking huge wide. Those cargo ships could pilot under the bridge going sideways.

I believe the pilot missed the mark. And I also know that we will never know the truth.

The oil slick in the water indicates the ship was going up stream/against current. That would push the bow to one side or the other.

I trust momma. No one else. I used to think there were good guys and bad guys in our government. Now I realize there are bad guys and worse guys.

I do not trust any government investigating agency. And I certainly don’t trust the media to hold them accountable.
