pump has a bypass arrangement. as pressure builds above a certain point it bypasses water from discharge back to suction. as pressure continues to rise it opens more. there is also a pressure setting to turn it off at a given point. it should not run 24-7-365

Thanks for trying to help, the “running non stop” was hyperbole. Just meant to convey I use it a lot. I’m assuming it’s not normal for it to discharge any type of black dust, but really not too worried as I have a backup. As mentioned the water leak was a separate issue, this pump is not leaking.

I believe shurflo is a Pentair brand and they make a lot of different pumps so should be a good one.
