The herding instinct is very strong in that breed.

We have a greater swiss mountain dog which is the larger, short haired "cousin" to your bernese. Here's an overview of the four distinct "branches" that make up the Sennenhund Breeds.
Sennenhund Breeds

Quote:
Bernese Mountain Dog
Berner Sennenhund

”The Bernese Mountain Dog, called in german the Berner Sennenhund, is a large breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. The name Sennenhund is derived from the German “Senne” (alpine pasture) and “Hund” (dog), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senn..Berner (or Bernese in English) refers to the area of the breed’s origin, in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. This mountain dog was originally kept as a general farm dog. Large Sennenhunds in the past were also used as draft animals, pulling carts. The breed was officially established in 1907. In 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized it as a member of the Working Group.” “On July 1, 2010 the Bernese Mountain Dog became eligible to compete in AKC Herding Events.”

You would think with all the Aussies we have had the herding would be second nature. This little guy likes reminds me of one of our Aussies who would herd a line of ants. So far he is doing good. Teething stage is happening, Elk Antler today from Tractor Supply. He slept all night last night, thank god!! No tugging of the sheet and licking my feet at 2 in the morning. Did get outside at 3 to tinkle and went right back to sleep.
I swear this is like having a two year old running around the house. He loves CLOGS, which my wife has ample worn out pairs for him to take advantage of. Today is supposed to be Sunny so some photo shoots are in the works. He reminds me of the movie Beethoven. When he is quiet go find him because he is up to something mischievous.
Thanks for the tips on the breed. I read up a bunch when we thought about getting a pup but you always find out more stuff. He is slowly getting our girls to warm up to him. That tail is like a whip when he gets excited. WOW!!
