Default Genius Idea!

A couple that lives on my Mom's street is getting or got a divorce. The house has been for sale for a few months, and it's probably not going to get sold any time soon with the current Wu flu panic in full swing.

We can assume that at least one of them had to find other living arrangements, pronto.

Idea:

Have some kind of 'divorce matching' roommate service. The spouses that are leaving the home would just swap places, moving into the respective guest bedrooms. This eliminates the need for renting an apartment/utilities for both couples, an expense they probably don't want or need while the sheets are being split. Kids now use the master bathroom, leaving the guest bath and guest room for the new tenant.

The matching service will run background checks and have compatibility checks and tests.....matching a neat freak with a neat freak, for example.

All involved would be facing a similar problem at the same time, so they hopefully would have tolerance and understanding, helping them cope with a new roommate situation. Both families save money. Win-win.

I don't have the skill set for that, but I've got the basic idea and some specifics, if somebody wants to run with it......just cut me in for 15% of the profits.

I'm thinking a flat charge of $ 600-700 per person seeking a roommate situation. That covers a credit and basic background check, could have a higher tier charging more, marketed to divorce attorneys for their clients, but offering a more in depth background check, but either way, all involved sign iron clad hold harmless agreements against the company.

Considering that anyone renting wants a big deposit, a year contract, etc., this would be cost effective for all. And when displaced person moves out, then a month to month tenancy could be worked out for the other displaced person in the arrangement. Still cheaper than immediately facing a deposit, rental agreement, moving expenses, etc. That could continue as long as both parties are willing.

Maybe some back end potential there, too, charging for a month to month tenancy agreement?

I'm pretty sure wife swapping websites are already a thing.

When I managed an apartment building in the 70s, I lost count of how many times the following scenario happened:

Guy in his thirties comes to look at an apartment, signs for it on the spot, writes a check for rent and deposit. Moves right in. The next day the furniture rental company shows up with all the furniture, TV, etc. Two weeks later the rental company comes and picks everything up, the guy gives 30 days notice and moves out immediately.

Three thousand dollar argument with the wife, now they are back together. At least until it happens again.

No we can't.

Nowadays the lawyers advise you not to move out of the family home lest your ex-partner accuse you of "child abandonment." Paulina Porizkova was still living with Ric Ocasek 2 years after they filed for dicorce.
