Hey Photo Gurus
Help a brother out. Has anyone here done any low-key photography? I'm really wanting to get some nice low-key shots of my wife. Portrait type shots.
Any experience with this? Tips? Tricks? |

5D MK III, 550 flash, no lighting, and yes a tripod. Several. Actually I'm investigating a lighting kit I can buy and expand.

Found this online. Couple of annoying popups but there is a lot of good content. Worth the look.

OK, I'm assuming by low key, you are looking for soft light/glamor type. This one was done with a cheap aluminum work light reflector and a 100 watt GE Reveal bulb. You need to play with white balance a bit for the light, or shoot RAW and adjust later. Use the tripod to avoid shake, and you can move the light around to get some different shadows. That's a quick and easy lighting solution. I have a pair of Alien Bee lights with Brolly boxes that work well (and not much $$). Also, some cheap props/backdrops help. I've used cheap material from walmart in addition to buying background paper and canvas backdrops..

I've been looking at Alien Bees. They seem to have a decent starter kit.

Definitely post up what you take (mistake photos and the good ones, so folks like me can learn from your mistakes).
Oh, and your wife's hott! |
