Default Quick Books

I've used it going on about 25 years and had to update any time that I've upgraded a PC. Every single time the program gets worse, and slower. My current version is 2021.

At the end of next month QB will cease support of the product and require a subscription. What are my alternatives? Shit, since I'm "mostly retired" I may just go with a spreadsheet.

Second question. How long will it be before Large Blob hijacks this thread?

I'm still using QB 2015! Works fine for my company (hope it doesn't die next month!)

When I got my business computerized in the mid-90s, my buddy's wife gave me a copy of her Microsoft Money (which we could do back then). It was simple and great, and way better than doing "real" books which was a major pain.

But MS kept making it worse, don't remember what I used next but QB was in there somewhere, along with another, more obscure one. I hated them all because they were WAY to complex and cumbersome for a small business that didn't even deal with the public.

So a few years before I retired a buddy of mine made me a personalized spreadsheet (I've never learned how to create them). It was great, simple, and did everything I needed.

When I did consult I was turned onto Zoho. Primarily used Zoho for billing and cash management. Details were in excel that I didnt enter in Zoho.

Check it out, while not quicken (which I didn’t want) it worked for what I did

FileMaker Pro was my goto for easy small business management. I used it for Little League and my consulting business. Looks like they have a cloud version now.

A friend has QuickBooks 2004 painstakingly installed on Microsoft Server 2019 running on a virtual machine. By installed, I think he copied the installed QB folder from a previous installation and kept massaging it until he got all the ancillary files that don't live in the QB folders and all the associated registry entries until it worked. He says his plan is to move that virtual machine to new hosts as needed. Thinks it should last for 20 years.

I've been using QB since the beginning, in fact Intuit bought out a prog called Money Counts by Parsons Technology and sent me the first issue of QB by mail for free way back when.
I switched to QuickBooks Pro because it also had estimating included with one click conversion to Invoice.

You can stay using an installed version forever as long as you don't need it to do payroll. Accounting doesn't change. I still used a very, very old version.

BTW, You can still find MS Microsoft Money for free out there on the web, now known as
MICROSOFT MONEY PLUS Sunset Deluxe
It works well installed on Win11

I sucked it up and switched to the online QB version, paid subscription. I did it mainly to ease communication with my CPA at tax time, but I have to admit, the online version has grown on me. It is nice to automatically import my bank transactions, and the Reconcile interface is pretty slick as well. It's not perfect, and it's not free, but it's a small drop in the bucket in terms of money spent to run my business.
