Indentured servants and slaves in all but name like the Minorcans were treated like slaves but not legally "owned" but might as well have been. And slavery wasn't as widespread nor lasted as long as the media and others with an agenda would have you beleive.

The South never had a chance, even with the brilliance of Robert E. Lee and attempts at European alliances... The industrial/agricultural base simply couldn't sustain a prolonged war. So speculation on them winning is just mental masturbation.

Legally, the south was in the right based on the constitution at the time. Also, they should have been allowed to split. This view is purely based on the law and constitution at the time. Morally, of course, slavery was bad but it was legal based on the constitution. Our founders had slaves and nothing in the constitution at this point was amended to make slavery illegal.
Amending the constitution to stop slavery should have gone through a democratic process and not via a war. Also, the South should have been allowed to split from the union.

You do understand that ending slavery was a byproduct of the Civil War and not the reason for it.

Bravo...someone actually get it! The Civil War was not fought because of slavery. It was fought over states rights as noted in the Constitution. Think Roe v. Wade. Democrats want abortion to be the law ofvthe land. Republicans...rightfully per the Constitution...want each state to decide.

It is understandable how many think civil war = slavery. Because of the corrupt government school system and the corrupt media.
