Default You Like Shine? I Like Shine.......

........no, not moon, the shine on black that is..........

Had the Z for just about 3 years now, have only washed it and detail sprayed the crap out of it. Prepping for the big Ocean City Corvette show and ride up the boardwalk next weekend, thought I'd put some effort into it.

Clay barred the contaminants, and it was loaded too, then machine buffed with mild Menzerna compound, then tomorrow I'll throw some Black Diamond sealer on it, some wax, good to go.

I just love cleaning the barrels on the wheels, that's why I do it once every three years. Will vacuum the cloth type material in the wheel wells, everything sticks to that surface.

I'm not complaining, I actually enjoy puttering around the car, keeps me busy.

Man, I went all out on my car today. I hosed it off before I rode up to Summit racing in McDonough Ga. It has been sitting for about 2 months and was covered in about an inch of dust. And....it still looks like shit.

I've never clay barred a car. Does it really work? I've detailed, painted, color sanded, etc...plenty over 40 years. I have just always wondered if that clay bar is snake oil.

Oh it works for certain, a microfiber cloth that practically sticks to the paint due to the contaminants will slide right across the paint after clay bar treatment

First two pics in OP, the contaminants on second clay was just from a one foot square area from a door. Mind you, that car was washed clean before clay barring. Smooth as glass now, speaking of glass, windshield has the same gunk built up on it as well, wouldn't hurt to do that too.

GG, you won't believe your eyes after the first time you clay bar a car.

I guess I just always thought there was some type of oil or wax in the clay and it left it behind on the surface to make it shine....just another way to wax a car.

What is your Menzerna source and how does it compare to Meguiars or 3M? I've often wondered if Meguiars and others are just relabeled 3M product...

Norm, it isn't shiny enough.

Go back and do it again.

Clay baring really doesn't shine anything, it just takes the built up solid contaminants off the surface. The shine part comes from whatever detail liquid you are using to lubricate the clay to glide across the surface. I suppose you can use dish soap in water, just won't leave a shine.

Menzerna can be had on line: https://www.menzerna.com/home/

I've used a lot of different compounds over the years, and most are of the same ingredients, just varying degrees of bite. Of late, I've been happy with the mild compounds that leave a detail like shine as well, with little or no dust up. The no dust up is important to me, keeps that mess down.

Contrary to popular belief, I drive this car whenever I can. Have taken many multi-state overnighter trips, have 36K on the clock, roughly 12K a year. It may sit like a queen in my garage, but it is not a garage queen.
