Actually later tall ships already carried kites as part of their sail allocation....there's any number of paintings of ships full underway and flying their kites....

The USS Constellation (1854 Sloop of war) displaced 1400 tons and had 20,000 square feet of sail to move at a top speed of 13 knots (at least what I can find).

A crude oil tanker can displace up to 550,000 dead weight tons... How big of kite do they need for any appreciable savings... and what is it made out of so it just doesn't shred pulling that much weight in a heavy wind...

Actually the company I work for is actively working on sails for our ships. The ship would still be under propulsion power but not have to use as much with the sails/kite deployed. They are looking for ways to lower the carbon footprint on the shipping industry.
And we have one of the largest fleet of ships or the largest in the industry and we are an AG company.
