I tow my track car with my 2010 2500 HD gas a few times a year through the mountains of the West Virginia turnpike. The new truck doesn't struggle at all, even on the steep grades and quite honestly tows as good as a lot of diesels that I have been in over the years (especially models from 5+ years ago). I think GM really did a good job with the new model trucks. They ride better as a DD than the old ones and at the same time tow better. Of course you are down a little bit on the power, but the overall tow with the built in brake controller, HUGE master cylinder and brakes on the truck, better suspension, 6 speed transmission, etc is IMO better than the GM diesels of a few years ago. (The truck I am comparing to is a 2002 2500 diesel)

The one part that I will NEVER dispute is the gas mileage with the gas trucks. It sucks. Period. I get about 12 mpg with my car behind the gas truck. Even with a trailer that weighs almost twice as much (26' enclosed dragster trailer) behind the big 3500 Ram dually we usually get in the 16-17 range. Hell, the diesel Ram gets better mileage loaded than my truck gets empty.

Even though I do love my current truck and for my needs it is MORE than enough, I am hoping to be in a Diesel Denali HD soon. Not because I need it... but because I want it.

and it is a great truck. fun to drive...easy to park...easy on gas...hauls like a pack mule...dependable as sunrise...

I just wish it was all electric with a 200 mile range.

I have nothing against full size pickups...matter of fact, I've owned many...probably more than most posters in this thread. although I have never owned a diesel...I don't like them, and never had the heavy towing/hauling needs to justify one.

The VP of the company I work for has this exact truck. When I used to have my black GMC Canyon I would joke that it was the baby brother to his truck. GMC Denali 3500 quad cab long bed dually diesel... awesome rig.

He bought it to tow his off-shore fishing boat whenever it had to be moved on-road. He has it docked at his house and has a short ride to the Chesapeake Bay and then right into the Atlantic. I think he tows it down to the Outer Banks when they're going far out because it's cheaper to do that then drive the boat down, but I don't really know. I think he told me it was 38'. There's a trailer that looks like the one below that sits in the back lot at work.

Tow with a big dually and get back to me about how "great" your truck is.

This was a stupid nutswinging discussion from the start. I will never understand the "mine is better" mentality that for some reason seems to consume people on the internet.
Really?

Stupid discussion?

Why is it any more “stupid” than someone trying to say:

Their 6 cyl Mustang runs as good as a SC Cobra.

Or

Their solid axle mustang is as good as a IRS mustang on the track.

Or

Their 3 spd automatic is just as good on the track as a 6 spd manual?

These discussions happen all the time. It’s just conversation.

All will get you down the track…. Just some will do it better.

this ^^^

is proof that 1/2 the guys with huge trucks are driving them to stroke the ego...not using them as a need.

back when I was a young tradesman...many contractors worked out of station wagons and panel vans (that were basicially station wagons w/o side windows)

by the time my dad got his 1st pickup (1972 Dodge), he really didn't need it as we had moved into the era of building materials delivery. at that point we were basicially hauling tools and small materials.

a secure tool hauler was the reason for the explosion of the full size van in the contractor world. Dodge even called theirs the "Tradesman" for decades.

same here, I'm driving a Tacoma...because the days of stopping at the yard and grabbing 100 - 2x12x16'ers are gone.

If only I could get a towing package for my 335d, I bet it would haul a boat nicely.

Not enough braking and weight. A vette has the power to tow but not the other aspects.

When I had a trailer hitch on my old Z06, to haul race tires and tools to the track on a small utility trailer, I towed my jetski a few times. Z06 hauls it fine.

Sure it will, but what you described isn't a 5k lb+ boat and trailer.
