FWIW, it seems that Rao's prices have dropped a lot since a few years ago. Used to be $12ish when everybody else was $4ish. Now they can be had for $6-8ish. Don't know if the quality has changed.

According to "Hurricane" Jane Talarico, my guide to genuine Italian cuisine and the mother of my bestie in high school tomato sauce is not always called sauce in Italian households... it is often called "gravy". Her family landed at Ellis Island early so this might be just a New York thing but I have heard sauce called gravy elsewhere.

No Italian calls marinara or any of it's tomato sauce based derivatives "gravy". And a tomato based meat sauce is called a "ragu" which translates to "gravy" in English, but that's a specific use case, not all pasta sauce is a "ragu".

Sauce is red.
Gravy is brown.

This debate came about because of a couple of reasons:
1) Ragu translates to "meat gravy" in English, and whomever buys the pasta sauce brand "Ragu" did the world a disservice by referring to it in English.
2) Some idiot restaurant reviewer wanted to "upscale" the word "sauce" and used "gravy" in the review. Moron reviewer.

Everyone has a "mother's sister's kid's wife's cousin is Sicilian" and they call it gravy. And that person is probably 99% some other nationality with an IQ of 2.

btw- Costco has Rao's sauce and it's considerably less expensive than your local supermarket. And they have it in the big jars.
