Where in Chile? It's a big country with cities, deserts, mountains, wildly different climate zones, etc.

North of Santiago to the southern chilean Patagonia. She’s got several small flights on the itinerary.

I've spent time in Santiago but never ventured north of there. Food in Chile is most excellent, and Carmenère wine is a must-try. It's a variety of grape originally from France but is now grown exclusively in Chile.

Just had vineyard owner friends make a trip there for the fourth time and Antarctica. The wine there is incredible according to their winemaking heads.

Carmenere is definitely the grape to look for in a medium bodied red. Kinda like Bikaver in Hungary. You mostly get what you pay for. Spend a few extra bucks and get the good versions. The other one to look for, although more popular in Uruguay, is Tannat. Bigger than Carmenere and way harder to make a wine that can be drank within a few years, but the top examples rival some of the best CA wines I have had.

I was never traveling to SA, but seeing it in their summer would be pretty sweet.

Watch a few episodes of Active Self Protection on youtube, and then exchange your tickets for Hawaii or the Bahamas or New Zealand or someplace civilized.

Based on the thread title, I'd be sure to bring warm clothing.

It is said to expect "4 seasons", all in one day!

Dress in layers. It will be spring when we will be there, before the busy tourist season but not in the freezing snow piles of winter.

I didn't lose a THING in South America - the US State Dept assesses Chili as Level 2 "Exercise Increased Caution" - that alone will keep me away; maybe when I was younger I'd be more confident but not now.

Yeah - Brazil is also a big feature on that ASP channel; family just returned from Ireland and daughter is on business in London and granddaughter will spend 2 weeks this summer at the University of Dublin - apparently a potential student "meet and greet". School is in the upper 1% if international academies.

LOTS of other places to go than South America....
I went to Costa Rica a couple of years ago and went cross-country on a bus, there are some scary-azz places all over the country.

Pretty sure that same warning should apply to every major city in the US.
