RIP Bill Freehan - Detroit Tigers
Billy put down the signals as well as anybody ever did behind the plate. I used to see him hosting client outings back in the 90's at Nemo's Bar next to Tiger Stadium in Detroit, he always appeared to be large and in charge.

Only ever saw one Tiger game in person. That was a 1968 Boy Scout field trip. We sat in left field behind Willie Horton so I couldn't tell you who played catcher in that game. I recall it being an Indians game and remember a lot of their fans in the stands.
On a side note I delivered newspapers to Northrups mom the next year. All I remember about that is hoping to see him visiting her, and wondering what kind of car he drove, never did see him there though. |

1964.. Detroit Tigers $12,000 1965 .. Detroit Tigers $18,000 1966 .. Detroit Tigers $18,000 1968.. Detroit Tigers $37,000 1973.. Detroit Tigers $65,000 1976.. Detroit Tigers $80,000 $230.000 total They don't have records of all the money he made those other years. How much were your parents making back in the 60's and 70' working 12 month a year not 9 month a year maybe 5-10k a year? |

Middle class was around 6-10k a year back then. Ball players were making more than 80% of a America playing a game 9 month out of the year maybe 5 hours a day. Not 8-10 hours a day sometime 6 days a week like the working class. My 5 brothers and sisters and mom all worked full time jobs just too afford a 14k home. And the top players were making over 100k a year in the 60's. I don't want to disagree with you bro but all athletes made more money than the average folks. Hell babe Ruth made 75k in the 30's |
