I do not know what other hospitals are doing, but ours is currently using them on our critical INPATIENTS as protocol based on the positive early data coming out of Europe. We are looking at the data all day long and adjusting protocol based on latest information as it becomes clear to us. Not using on confirmed positives if stable.

Local pharmacies have mandated not to dispense to anyone not previously on this medication for arthritis etc...

Sounds like the malaria med is given over 10 days. If y'all have already started giving it out, you should be seeing results one way or another pretty soon. Either the infected are getting significantly better, in a fairly short amount of time, or they aren't. Of course, I'd expect younger people to bounce back quicker than the elderly, so there's that.

Keep us posted on your anecdotal observations.

If it is true that warm weather is the enemy of this virus,I'm happy to see that Houston temps will be in the 90s this week for about 3 days straight.

That scenario is playing itself out in Italy as we speak. You're a fool if you think it can't/won't happen here.

Dude, take a peek behind the curtain and actually think for yourself. Here's some points to consider:
  • Italy has the world's second oldest population. The U.S. isn't even in the top 25.
  • Italy has a high concentration of smokers. The U.S. doesn't.
  • Italy's population is tightly packed into a very small area. The U.S. population isn't.
  • Italy's medical care system leaves a whole lot to be desired.
  • Italy has a high concentration of Chinese workers due to Italy's aging and declining population. The U.S. doesn't.

I could go on, but hopefully you'll do some basic research of your own and quit believing everything the media says and parroting it back as fact.

You're comparing apples and watermelons and telling us they're the exact same thing. You're WRONG.

My question to you,

During the WORSE flu season in Italy, what was the highest daily fatality rate?

Get that number and get back to me.

Don't know. Don't much care. You keep saying it's not the flu and we shouldn't compare.

Question to you: From a medical perspective is a comparison between Italy and the U.S. valid for a virus that affects those who are older and have preexisting medical issues valid?

Italy has a very high mortality rate with the flu, over 20k per year many years in the last decade. Mainly the elderly.
They don't have daily deaths but one could extrapolate deaths. 20,000 \ 120 = 167 a day on average. Figure peak would be double easy so 300 lets say worst day.

6 million had the flu in Italy during the same time frame.

No, we cannot compare to Italy in respect to our patient population. You are correct.

What we can compare to Italy is that we are not testing widely as they have in S. Korea. As I keep saying, we have no idea who has this and who doesn't, until we DO that, isolation is the best answer. In ~18 months a vaccine will be the best answer.

My ultimate point is, we are completely unprepared for COVID, if we (as a World) cannot handle this, another influenza pandemic, will be the BIG one. Hopefully this has been a wake up call for the WORLD! If a flu pandemic like this hits the world, or another virus, that kills of all ages equality, we are in big trouble.

Correct, the main base line statistics on patient population are the same; be it flu or COVID, the main difference? Instead of critically ill patients being spread out over several months of flu season (fall of one year to spring of the next) COVID hits ALL AT ONCE>.

SARS COV 2 is more virulent, lives longer outside the human body and viral load is present (contagious) when a carrier is NOT symptomatic.

This thing is ugly..... hopefully that is becoming clear.

I hate it more than anyone, but this is the reality we are facing.

I would prefer to wake up tomorrow and this was all a bad dream and in 2 weeks it is a thing of the past, but sadly that will not happen.

You sound extremely panicky. I hope you are open minded enough (and it appears you are) to hear and consider all sides of the situation.

The soldier being fired at on the front line has a far different perspective than the General in DC. That soldier feels like he's getting his ass kicked and it is hopeless, but the General is watching the entire war and sees victory right around the corner.

Your perspective may be skewed because of what is happening in front of you.

I disagree, front line soldier would imply I am unable to see what is happening any place other than my clinic/hospital "front line"..... I am able to follow not only other clinics, hospitals, cities and actually, across the ocean in other countries.... This is WORLD wide, how can anyone not accept this.

It's not a matter of not accepting it, but freaking or or staying calm yields no change in outcome. If I start losing my shit and running in circles, I don't magically become immune.

I think it is worse than I know it to be, but not as bad as what we are hearing from the news.

I'm worried, but I'm calm.

I am sorry you feel I am not calm. You are not in on the conversations I am having with my patients, most of the patients I interact with are already panicked enough.

To help you understand my "passion" not panic.

This was one of the nurses we lost in our SSM hospital network.

Her life and lives like hers is what drives my passion.

Just like my passion to convince people to secure a gun away from kids, or to wear a seat belt, I am passionate about people taking this social distancing seriously.

My sincerest hope is that you, your elderly parents and everyone other than Kasey Anthony and a few others are safe from this asshole virus.

Fair enough. Passionate perspective is something I can appreciate and am all too aware can be misunderstood.

Wife said her company is starting production on 2 vaccines and 2 therapeutics today. If the FDA approves, they can go to full production in 14 days.
