I bought an '03 Explorer new. It had 156K on it, and they were hard miles. It was the workhorse for my RE rental business, AND my son's robotics team. I was stopped in front of my house in November of 2018, and some douche bag slammed into it from behind, totaling it. If that hadn't happened, I'd probably still be driving it.

You saying the transmission was replaced before you owned yours, can't mean anything other than you bought it used from someone who abused the shit out of it. I find it hard to blame the manufacturer for that.

I have read horror stories about the transmissions and water pumps on that era. Perhaps its abuse...just lots of internet reports.

I had a sweet 2002 4Runner limited that a drunk totalled while it was sitting in front of my house. Id still be driving it as well had that idiot not taken it from me.

In the industry, starting in 1992, Ford Explorers had issues. The first gen had trans issues, the following later ones (2000's) had timing chain failures and plastic tailgates that cracked in two. Not what I would buy. On the other hand, the Rangers, Crown Vics, and Fusions were always excellent. And their Escape Hybrid. Excellent vehiciles.

I had a 1994 Eddie Bauer Edition Explorer. Black with tan interior. Bought it used with 76,000 miles. Paid $14,000. That was a great little SVU. The new models are huge in comparison.

Entire family loved that SUV. Needed a water pump @ 80,000 miles and transmission went out around 120,000. Ran it until it quit @ 167,000 miles. At the end it had a coolant leak that no one could find. They wanted $500 just to take apart to find the leak.

This era of SUV was dialed in. Not too big for trail use, not too small. I had a '94 4Runner that I paid 9k for with 110,000 miles on it. Drove it 16 years and another 100,000 miles and sold it. Still had the original clutch in it. Had to replace a radiator and front brake pads and a couple of batteries. That's it.
