The embassy remains open. The U.S. had previously warned its citizens that they should "depart Haiti as soon as possible by commercial or other privately available transportation options."

Earlier this month, armed gangs orchestrated jailbreaks from Haiti's two largest prisons and demanded the resignation of the Caribbean nation's prime minister, Ariel Henry. The Haitian leader is not currently in the country, and is petitioning the international community for a United Nations-backed security force to step in.

More than 4,500 inmates have escaped, including senior gang leaders, the United Nations said last week, adding that the jailbreak was the result of "coordinated gang action against national institutions."

Mid 90s during the turmoil in Haiti, there was a news report and they had footage of a Haitian running around with an M1 Garand ( WWII / Korean weapon using .30-06 ) and the clueless news reporter called it an "antiqued weapon".

Well that "antiques weapon" was much more powerful that the M16. All the testing results had to be lowered for the M16 to pass.

Place always been a shithole, after Hurricane Mathew it got worse.
Lots of money was sent to rebuild the power and electric grids, believe most of the money was stolen or pissed away.
