One of the great frauds perpetrated by the .gov is that your FICA and medicare taxes are going into an account for you to draw on later in life. In fact, the SS and Medicare systems are simple pay-as-you-go systems and the taxes are simple payroll taxes, having absolutely nothing to do with an account for you.

Further, both systems were established as a safety net for those who couldn't (or wouldn't) provide for themselves. At the founding of SS, there were 15 workers for every retiree and the average life expectancy for retirees was on the close order of two years. Now, there are just over 2 workers for every retiree and the average remaining life expectancy is 17 years. As to medicare, when you've got health care costs compounding at double digits, it can't work, especially as 50% of our society's health care expenditures are made to recipients in their last 4 months of life.

Since politicians who tell truth don't get elected (that goes for my friend, too), you won't hear the truth, either because they lie outright or don't read the shit they pass. Either way, the sounds you hear are old woman's sobbing, er, John Boehner crying and bullshit from the dems.

Now, having promised benefits to everyone in exchange for votes, the pols are decrying the pension funds as the cause of our trouble, even though it is they who determine the funding, er, taxes and contributions to the systems, and the benefits, in which they are also beneficiaries.

Our Kleptocracy, er, democratic system of government is like all others...designed for a small group to live off the larger group by exploitation. When too egregious, the larger groups rebel...like Russia (1917), China (1947ish), Tunisia (2011), Egypt (2011), EU (201?), YouEssofMeh (2???). For the nonce, however, our taxes are at their lowest levels in half a century while our .gov attempts to bullshit and buy votes. Not to worry, however, we'll be like the 5 little PIIGS soon enough.

You are assuming you have knowledge to make correct investment choices.
Taxpayers do not want to support you for your poor investment choices
Keep following sheep, SS will always be around for those who need it.

Nice rant ... you forgot the part about Social Security initially known as the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program essentially as unemployment insurance borne out of the Republican 1st Great Depression due to the same (global) fraud perpetuated as the Republican 2nd Great Depression ....

One thing I've noticed about my forays into DC over the years is that there is very little incentive for change, no matter which ruling class is in charge.
The OP's comments and conversations confirmed what I've heard over the years, from Democrats and Republicans.
Anyone denouncing status quo and shouting "reform" is quickly and efficiently labeled "lunatic fringe" and dismissed.

That's just the way it is.

Where it gets real wierd, is the wacko tea baggers calling themselves Founding Father revolutionalists ... FDR could have easily gone the socialist/communist/national socialist fascist route that emerged globally after the Republicans cause the first global depression ... instead he invented *insurance programs* in case capitalism ever failed again ...

FDR's wisdom was in fact derived from what the Foundng Fathers *meant* ...

Yes, the atrocity of this years' CPAC was that it came at the same time as Egypt/Mubarak ... kind of like when Katrina hit Bush ...

... karma is a bitch ...
