Someone in my neighborhood was giving them away for free. Just as nice. Various patterns. Double layer cloth. I tried to give her money or donate fabric, but she would not accept.

I do nuance just fine, I don't do ad hominem attacks. But apparently you do. You sure are a tough guy, aren't you?

If you're such a tough guy, and have something to say to Snide, why don't you just say it? Why "nuance" it like a ***** and then lash out when you get called on it?

I'm starting to understand to whom Sandy's warning was directed.

You don't actually know what "ad hominem" means, do you?

That's very noble. However, not all of us had material laying around. BTW, if the person did any research on making masks the triple layer for the 100% cotton mask was the preferred way. Any maybe she is more of a crafter than I am and had elastic stock piled. I had to purchase fitted sheets to harvest elastic, and guess what the stores made me pay for them .

So asking for a donation to cover materials that allowed me to make them for others is NOT profiteering. I offered them because we couldn't locate any and thought as the lock downs spread others would find themselves in the same position and maybe not have the ability to make them.

Sorry, I'm just a little offended.

They are double layer with ties, no elastic. We got two. I practically insisted I give them something for them. She wouldn’t have it. I will just pay it forward.

Paying for shipping I can see, paying to cover your expenses and maybe make a buck or two I can see. I was just ****ing with snide. Sorry to offend someone the post wasn’t intended for.

Having watched my wife make a couple hundred masks, I doubt $5 per mask would cover minimum wage. We got fabric donated, so much that we gave much of it to other people making masks. We bought elastic from Amazon online. Spent about $80 there, but we still have lots left. Buying was tricky because we did not know how many masks we were making and whether we would be able to get more supplies later because of possible shortages and demand.

We put changeable filters in our masks which we made by taking apart high dollar furnace filters. (tedious work) Over $100 wrapped up in those, but we also over bought on those for the above reasons. No complaints because the hospital reimbursed us for all our purchases, but not our labor, of course, because we are volunteers.

Sure, we could have sold them, but I bet I could have made more money per hour panhandling. Five dollars was a steal on your masks, especially with free shipping.

I'm his wife and the person who made them, so you can see how I took it personally.

Could you not afford to buy one?

Capitalism - Selling masks in a competitive market and maximizing return on investment based on an understanding of the market

Profiteering - Selling at a maximum price when competition does not exist or where supply has been intentionally manipulated

Freeloading _ taking a product for nothing when you can afford to buy it, thereby preventing someone that can't afford it, from possibly obtaining it.
