Default Meals from scratch . . .

Back around 1980 we were at the Braddocks Bay Hotel, 8-10 miles from where I lived at the time (west of Rochester, NY). It was a frigid February day; we'd been snowmobiling and were ready for a big meal.

I ordered a "Pork and sauerkraut" dinner. I can normally take or leave sauerkraut, but this was actually pretty good.

It was, apparently, a pork roast baked with sauerkraut and potatoes. At any rate, that's what I took from it and have been making it since. It's a great cold-weather Sunday dinner. I've added/modified it since.

Brown the pork roast, remove, brown chopped onions. Put all in baking dish, add ground pepper, some brown sugar and a bay leaf, with the sauerkraut and its juice, in a 300-or whatever oven with some garlic and parsley mixed in.

Bake for maybe 2 hours, then add celery and carrots. After they are half done add potatoes. Can also add apple chunks; bake until done.

Looks good. Try slow cooking baby back ribs with sauerkraut on a cold winter day. Delicious with mashed potatoes.

I end up tweaking all recipes. The original meal I had at the hotel was just pork, kraut, and taters.

Add or subtract ingredients as you wish.

However, beef stew MUST HAVE CELERY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you make it without celery and don't rename it something other than "beef stew", the FBI will be knocking on your door with a $50,000 fine.

this here is one of my favorite recipes I grew up with in Italy. Has always been my go-to for cheap and easy to make meal from scratch when short on time.... or cooking for a date at her place.

Looks mighty tasty, would be 100X better if beef, but that is just me.

Is there a reduced fine if using celery seed instead?

I prefer to flavor my cooked meals with celery seed these days. Works great, doesn't take much, a small bottle will last for years... And there's no left over stalks rotting in the fridge

With no mushrooms or olives, you aren't going to win any Kettle of Waste contests here.

I have to agree, but potato’s and carrots are a must also.

Mushrooms and olives are NOT food, and do not belong in ANY prepared food dish.

Best meal from scratch posted on VB, Japanese curry from NAV. It has become one of my staples for comfort food.
