I don't think the existence of the SOSUS array is a secret, what probably is, is the capabilities.

The common theme I’m observing is the conflation of Gentlemen Adventurers with The Great White Hunter and Venture Capitalists.

Gentlemen Adventurers died doing adventurous stuff that wealthy people with egos have done since the dawn of civilisation and with increasing frequency alongside overall rising general wealth.

A series of very impressive feats only exceeded by the size of the cheques he wrote to fund them.

That’s not envy or an insult, just an observation.

The guy may not have summited K2 without O2 or got in a knife fight with a troop of baboons, but he made the money that allowed him to put his own nuts on the line to pursue his own gentleman adventurer dreams.

Historically, it has been the wealthy who have led the way in terms of niche exploration of new territory.

Gentlemen Adventurers get their adventure experience photos for their “I Love Me” wall, human exploration expands, and everyone in the supply chain they paid to drag them to the top of Everest or the bottom of the Marianas Trench gets paid.

The Great White Hunter comes into play here as it is historically linked to the Gentleman Adventurer.

We’ve seen several examples of massive outrage directed against white male hunters with the Cecil the Lion incident, trophy hunting photos of the Trumps, and any trophy hunting photos from anyone actually.

Historically, it has been affluent and wealthy folks who have driven humans in the right direction in terms of wildlife conservation.

And that includes big game hunters helping fund the conservation of endangered species thru carefully managed hunts generating the cashflow to protect the species, far more than photo safaris.

The Great White Hunters get their hunting trophy wall, the species survives and thrives, and lots of people in the conservation and hunting supply chain get paid.

The Venture Capitalists fund the ideas of others like modern day House of Medici.

They may not have the talent themselves, but they recognise talent when they see it, and deploy their capital to watch talent create cool sh!t they can’t.

Back then it was philanthropy directed at Michelangelo, Galileo, Raphael, Botticelli, and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Today it’s Apple, Amazon, Intel, and SpaceX.

The Venture Capitalists get their name on the Cap Table(priceless ego points), absolutely staggering returns in 1 out of 50 investments, even more job created, and the biggest single general wealth creator in human history.

I view Gentleman Adventurers, Great White Hunters, and Venture Capitalists as the historical, but no longer exclusive, domain of The Middle Aged White Guy with a big fat ego.

Countless adventures, hunting trophies, and trillions created.

There are downsides to exploration, hunting, and venture investing.

However, the upsides to all three are overwhelmingly and massively positive.

But the clear theme from mass media, and the masses on social media is:

Don’t explore
Don’t hunt
Don’t invest
Don’t profit
Don’t win

That article doesn’t take into account that back during past eras, the technology was much different. Today they have engineers and testing organizations that could have designed a safe sub. Exploring anything in that coffin with an arrogant asshole like that….well, that’s just a piss poor decision.
