Default Gun Permit; now what?

My wife & I received our firearms ID cards & handgun permits on Thursday; 9 weeks start to finish. I actually expected worse from NJ.

So now when the local gun stores open up, we need to decide what to buy.

We went to an indoor range with our son & his wife before the pandemic started, & used their guns. He has some version of a Springfield Armory 1911 in .45, & she has some version of a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield EZ in .380. We each also got aout 1/2 hour of instruction from the range officer, but will probably go for some further formal training.

My wife liked shooting the S&W, and will probably just buy the same as our DIL has. She's not much of a researcher or procrastinator. I enjoyed both, but found my son's 1911 a little hard to operate. Maybe something I would just need to get used to.

So I need to decide what to buy. Our primary use will be target shooting at the local indoor range. Secondarily, I'll feel comfortable having guns in our house for home defense, as unlikely as I expect the need to be. Ammo for .380, .45., & 9mm all seem cheap enough for my purposes.

I've looked on the web at well-known brands, but being a noob, I get confused easily with all of the features of the many various models, even within the offerings of a given manufacturer.

So I'd appreciate any suggestions, recommendations, etc., with regard to what I should look at. The local range seems to have a good inventory of rentals, so i should be able to try out any possible candidates. FWIW, I'm looking at pricing from $500- $1000.

Compact, easy to fire, with a little power, M&P 9's are nice, Ruger LC9 (which I carry), something that is comfortable, preferably no bulge showing under shirt or however you carry it.

If you want to get good at it, practice, practice, practice, muscle memory is very important.

Best of luck.

Can't go wrong with a phased plasma rifle, in the 40 watt range. Might be a little difficult to CCW, though. Good truck gun or home defense, for sure.

Go to a range that rents firearms. Shoot anything that stands out. Talk to the people working there for some ideas.

I dunno, I say 12 ga short barrel semi auto 00 buck, that way you don't have to be a expert shot under pressure......course a pistol in bedroom is good for nighttime surprises, but I ASSume that would be much closer range....depending on how good your electronics are......

Get down to a mob firefight shituation....12 ga every time......

you need to find a friend with a good selection of pistols to try out.

i carry a Beretta 92G (decocker only) Centurion (shorter barrel) 9mm.

i have also carried previously a Beretta Px4 Compact (3.2" barrel, 15+1 capacity), and the last time i shot that pistol in Feb, i missed making Expert by 0.90 seconds (course of fire includes shots at 20 yards). I've converted that one to decocker only, so it's always ready to fire.

stick with 9mm. the larger the gun, the less recoil you will feel.

What you should buy is (1) what you can shoot accurately and (2) what you would be willing to carry as often as you would like to be armed.

You won't know the answers to either of these two questions without shooting a lot of guns.

Thanks for the comments; some things to think about.

I should have mentioned that I'm in NJ, where carry permits are pretty much unobtainable for common folk, so carrying for me isn't a factor.

If you decide to purchase off the internet, you still will be following all the rules so it will be a legal purchase. ( Check but I think NJ has a 10 round magazine limit ) The firearm will be sent to a FFL holder and then whatever the state laws are, they will be followed.

Since concealed carry isn't a concern right now, you can get a full size weapon if you choose.

If you want a revolver, I have a Ruger GP-100 in .357 magnum I really like. The advantage of a .357 revolver is that you can shoot .38 special ammo out of it for practice. It's less expensive than .357 and also recoils less. ( note-- very few weapons can shoot different cartridges, the .38 special / .357 magnum is one and another is the .44 S&W / .44 magnum is another )

As mentioned, if you can find a shop or a friend with multiple weapons you can try, then you will probably find something that you like.

Below is my Ruger GP-100 in .357 magnum caliber. It's double or single action and has a 6" barrel with adjustable sights.

If you go 1911 and want one that won't break the bank and be high quality, look for a Fusion.

There's a night sighted Glock 19 (9mm) next to the bed. A SCCY 9mm in the living room and a night sighted SIG P320 fullsize .45ACP near the front door.
That said, I am like Jeff and recommend a revolver for a tyro's home defense since the manual of arms is as simple as pick up, point, press trigger. No safety to fumble with, no slide to rack, no worries about whether there's a round in the chamber because pressing the trigger brings a a fresh cartridge to bear every time.
Buy either a Ruger or a Smith and Wesson that fits your hand and of at least .38 caliber.
Then practice, practice practice.

I started out with an AMT Hardballer and a RG .22 revolver of some sort. They both worked!

EDIT: The Israelis take their weaponry very seriously. I am certain it is a fine pistol!
