'Puter help
Internet speed is between 230 and 254 Mbps.
Computer speed test on my lapt top and another laptop is only 95. I can't figure out what is choking it down or how to fix it. I am not talking about wifi. This is wired ethernet. The cable guy unplugged my laptop and plugged his in and it hit 233. I plugged mine in and it went to 95 Any help is appreciated. |

Are these newer computers? Are you sure they are gigabit Ethernet connections in the PC?
No vpn? Check your Ethernet settings, are they fixed IP addresses/ over-riding the dns? Did you turn off WiFi for the test to make sure you were testing Ethernet? |

That 95 number is suspiciously close to 100 Mbps, which is a standard Ethernet speed. You could have cables that your router detects as not suitable for 1000 Mbps (or anything over 100) or your computer's Ethernet ports may be set to 10/100 instead of 10/100/1000.
If you have a hub connected to the computers, and then connected to your router, it's probably a 100 Mbps hub and not a gigabit hub. You want Cat-6 Ethernet cables for gigabit just FYI. |

The last couple I got were flat and about 1/4" wide, and they work great. I've put many ends on Cat-V and Cat-VI cables but nowadays you rarely need more than a few cables due to wifi being so good, so it's easier to just buy them.

It appears the laptop is only able to use 10Mbps or 100Mbps when I look at the advanced menu. It is set to auto negotiation and is running max. I guess I should not expect much from 13 year old ethernet house wiring and a 7 year old laptop. I do expect more from the wifi though. I assume somewhere it is also limited by the laptop.

I wouldn't worry about being limited to just 100 Mbps on your laptop. You can still get the full bandwidth out of your internet if you are using more than one device at a time, like streaming some video on two or more devices simultaneously.

Often there is a menu setting that will display this sort of information. For example, on YouTube there is a "stats for nerds" button you can click to show this kind of stuff.

That is of course assuming he just took the cable you've been using and plugged it into his laptop and not changed anything else. Getting an upgraded network card is easy if you have a desktop. Laptops can be a bit more challenging to upgrade, esp a hardwired network port on the motherboard. |
