He awoke (x-military) and herd someone calling for help. So he grabbed his shot gun walked out side to my lawn and said "someone need help" and with a pump of the shotgun, both guys ran off.

A shotgun does a lot of damage at close range and you don't have to be that accurate. Couple a shotgun with a good 9mm pistol that Cybercowboy mentioned, and you should be good to go unless you need a rifle for long distances.
Also acceptable: "Get off my lawn!"

Hands down, the correct answer.

If you enjoy shooting it, you practice with it. If you practice with it, you'll get good with it. If you get good with it, you can trust it to protect if the need arises.

I have a couple of 1911's that I love (one fullsize and one carry size). I love shooting them both, and carry them in the winter.

I have a S&W Shield in 9mm (performance center version). Nice and slim and carries well. This is what I carry when I am backpacking or outdoors.

I also have a Sig P238 in .380 that is my 'light carry' when I'm riding my bike, or out and about and just don't want to carry the Shield. It's like a baby 1911 and I'm very comfortable with that style of firearm.

But you need to try a multitude of firearms. It's fun AND you get educated about what you feel comfortable shooting and shooting WELL! You may prefer a Glock or a H&K or a Ruger or a Springfield XD (or XDm or XDs) or a Walther. So many choices.

This is the fun part!!!!

Please let us know what you end up getting!

My preference would always be a safety AND decocker. Then again, I'm old and not hip to what the kids are doing these days.

I have several guns with decockers on them, but I think the great thing about the Glock is that each trigger pull is identical. It is easy to pull a shot one way or the other between DA and SA. Hell, I have a brand new CZ75B Omega convertible that I haven't even shot yet. It comes with the decocker installed, but you have the option of converting it over to a traditional safety, and comes with the part. Thus the "convertible" designation. My current carry gun is a Taurus G2C, but I also have a new Springfield 911 in 9mm that I'm anxious to get familiar with.

If you get a first gen Glock ( late 80s early 90s), make sure the factory box was been replaced with the "new" ones.

They designed the old box to pull the trigger when it was put in the box ( relaxed firing spring tension) and some folks were putting loaded weapons in the box. they went "BANG"
