Looks like 10-16 days from exposure to back up and around, and you don't require hospitalization unless you're old, already sick, or otherwise not in decent health.

But hey, e'erybody panic all up in here!

That's a very legitimate question that I haven't seen answered yet. I'd also like to know how long the virus survives on hard surfaces. How long does it survive on my steering wheel, or a countertop?

I've heard that it doesn't survive very long exposed to the environment. It needs to be in a host within an hour or so. And the warmer it is, the faster it croaks.

From harvard website, not sure how up to date.

Can a person who has had coronavirus get infected again?

While we don't know the answer yet, most people would likely develop at least short-term immunity to the specific coronavirus that causes COVID-19. However, you would still be susceptible to a different coronavirus infection. Or, this particular virus could mutate, just like the influenza virus does each year. Often these mutations change the virus enough to make you susceptible, because your immune system thinks it is an infection that it has never seen before.

How long can the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 survive on surfaces?

We don't yet know how long the coronavirus can survive on surfaces such as plastic, porcelain, granite, steel, or copper. In the meantime, the CDC recommends cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects every day. These include counters, tabletops, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and bedside tables.

If surfaces are dirty, first clean them using a detergent and water, then disinfect them. A list of products suitable for use against COVID-19 is available here. This list has been pre-approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"We found that viable virus could be detected in aerosols up to 3 hours post aerosolization, up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel."

3 hrs to 3 days it can survive on various surfaces, depending on temp and surface.

That’s one thing Th at is atypical about this “novel” virus. It seems to have the capacity to survive outside of a host longer than most viral bugs.

True, but it IS effected by temperature. It's fixin' to be Summer in Houston, which ought to bring this to a seasonal end here, at least. I grabbed a shopping cart last night when I went grocery shopping. How long is the virus going to last on a shopping cart handle or steering wheel that's 140 degrees after heating up in our sunny, hot climate? Probably not too long.

Wu flu: "Herro, I'm from out of town, and I'm something of a badass."

Texas: "Yeah, OK. Welcome to Texas, asshole." [laughs in Texan]

Outside of the usual common sense precautions, The only change I have made is to take a leave of absence from volunteering at the hospital. I read this morning that some VA hospitals have shut down their volunteer programs. I needed a break anyway.

About 90% of the procedures performed at our hospital are elective. Mostly Colonoscopies and Cataracts. It's probably only a matter of time until people start postponing them (I would) or the hospital shuts them down because the staff is needed elsewhere if this this thing does get worse.

I knew if I typed in what I heard a few days ago, there'd be an article stating otherwise.

Because the Chinese needed something that could travel by cargo ship and still be effective.

Viruses are not "alive" as they don't meet certain criteria accepted by scientists.
A virus is either viable if able to infect or non-viable if degraded beyond contagion. The term "live virus" has become commonplace but it is a misnomer.

I bet anyone that has to stay home from this won't get a break on their bills. You had the kung flu? You still owe $400 on your electric bill. Car payment still due. Rent? Pay up. Mortgage, Pay up. Many families can't afford to miss 2 weeks of work.

Absolutely correct... If you don't have sufficient sick/personal time or maybe vacation too bad so sad no pay for most. I see some companies are extending leave to positive tested people, but what about those who are exposed and have to stay home also as a precaution?
With all the schools that have/will close it also creates a financial burden as ypu are not sick and maybe don't have leave/can't stay home just because...
I'm wondering about tech and other schools that programs are not online(cant be) what will happen, shift everything or sucks to be you no credit take it over(maybe next year as some only offered once a year).
I'm not saying precautions shouldn't be taken but it can and will cause hardships to those who never get sick.
