Yes, I live in the US, and have for 20 years. And yes, have bought "American" cheese from the deli counter. And I don't care for it.

The wife buys "American Cooper" occasionally, and while it has a distinct and not-unpleasant flavor, I'd much rather have a sharp cheddar.

BTW, that shit is so nasty, my dog won't eat it.

There is real American cheese that we get at the deli counter here. It is very different from the "cheese food", and is very good. I use it on cheesesteaks and bacon and egg sandwiches, as well as burgers.
Exactly. Real American cheese is basically a very meltable cheddar. It's like a yellow version of jack cheese. I usually go with pepper jack on my burgers, but honestly some of the best cheeseburgers you'll ever eat have just good ole American cheese. I love smash burgers, two patties, nice and caramelized, with two slices of cheese (one melted on each thin patty.) But a regular "thick" hamburger on the grill is pretty hard to beat. For me I like to keep it simple on the toppings. Yellow mustard, dill pickles, thin sliced white onion, tomato only if it's vine ripened and in season, and sometimes I'll toss on some fresh or roasted jalapenos or Hatch green chilies. The local grocery store makes fresh hamburger buns daily and they are pretty much perfect. They make a ton of them because some local restaurants buy dozens of packs of them every day. I pretty much won't even bother making a burger if I can't get fresh buns.

I think the score is tied for me as far as best cheese on a burger.

Super sharp cheddar or bleu cheese.

Since when did “blue” get voted in and by who There are virtually a dozen choices I’ve tried being;
- mushroom w Swiss and carmelized onion
- gouda
- blue/ Gorgonzola
- Brie
- cheddar or smoked cheddar
- Munster
- American cheese product
- Monterey Jack
- pepper jack
- goat cheese
- Stilton
- provolone is good.....
- goat cheese.

If it melts, it works

Unless you’re doing wagyu, which I haven’t, 80/20 ground beef of decent quality makes the best burgers. Salt and pepper is all it needs.

A good hamburger is like a good steak. The better the meat, the less crap it needs to taste good
