Default Last known 9/11 rescue dog laid to rest...

Bretagne, the last ast known 9/11 search dog, was euthanized in the Houston area. Firefighters gatherer as the ailing golden retriever is put down. Almost two dozen local firefighters and members of the search dog community honoured Bretagne with a hero's send-off, lining the entrance to the vet's office and saluting the old dog as she passed by. After Bretagne was put down, her body was draped with an American flag. She'll be taken to Texas A&M University, where vets will study possible effects that exposure to Ground Zero had on her body.

i'm conflicted on this. not just this case, but overall.

Mrs. DAB had a kitty cat long ago, he got very ill, and she had him put down. that was a tough day for her.

our prior doggie, who we adopted from Mrs. DAB's mom (when mom could no longer care for doggie), one day wandered off/got taken by a coyote, never to be seen again.

our current doggie is about 3-1/2 years old, likely to live to 12-15 years. would i put her down when she gets very old, or just do my best to take care of her and let nature take its course?

hey Leah, time for a walk!

Denise Corliss, Bretagne's (pronounced "brit-tennie") handler, said Bretagne's kidneys had started to fail in recent days, and that she realized the time had come to say goodbye when the food-loving retriever refused her meals for three consecutive days.

"She was really anxious last night and she just wanted to be with me," Corliss said on Monday. "So I laid down with her, right next to her. When she could feel me, she could settle down and go to sleep. I slept with her like that all night."

I have to agree that is is more kind to euthanize a dog in this condition than to let her die by starvation.

i was reading Dana Perino's book "and the good news is", and she had some stories about growing up out west in CO and WY, and one story was about her uncle and the day he had to put down a lame horse. he told her to put her head down in the back seat, and not to look up until he said so. there was a gun shot, and then he got back in the truck. but she looked up. touching story about treating animals humanely, when they are suffering, how it is right to relieve them of their suffering in a quick manner (in this case, a gun shot to the head).

could i do that? dunno. haven't had to make that decision yet.

Growing up on a farm I've had to do it several times. Trust me...you can and will do it when the time comes...because you'll know it's the right thing to do.

Knowing I was a CAT man, Linda brought in a rescue cat from the vet down the road, and so it was named PO.....black and white cat, but she got sick for about a week, just layed around and not eating......Chinese/melamine cat food that killed many a pet over here......

Wife walked in with TWO rescue kittens a while later on....BO is my buddy, good for arm and tummy rubs.....and flopping......his sister is Diddly and good for EAR rubs.....I rub them ears smack off that cat, but she gathers them up and glues them back on again.......
