This is why I laugh when a poster here says "call the guy". In my world, the true measure of a man is how much that he can do himself.

Me too, always have been. But as I get older and spend more time with older people, I can understand calling the guy.

Two weeks ago I 'called the guy' for a toilet pull and re-ring. I would have done it myself but was sure a rooter job would be needed. Nope. Just the ring. So it cost me $180 more than had I done it myself. No worries. Would I call the guy again? Yep. Give me more time to do dirty stuff in the shop with my old cars, which I actually enjoy.

As we enter our 60's, retirement, and beyond, we sure as hell have earned the right to 'call the guy' even if we CAN do the job ourselves.

Hell, even metrosexuals with manicures like Rickles here knows how to R and R a carburetor.

Most (all ?) A/C units have a float cutoff switch in pipes connected to the drain pan, to stop operations if they detect excessive moisture - but, they don't always work. In most places, especially Florida, a once a month dose of bleach down the A/C drains is the ticket. Algae can build up in drain pipes in mere weeks with the heat and humidity in the state.

A sensor in the drip pan WILL detect water and produce a false alert, some condensation there is normal. A leak detector like this under the pan/air handler works great; mine has saved me grief at least twice:

That’s nice but if I had many hundreds of millions I would hire a property manager and he can call the guy.
When you have been building homes and working on homes and doing home maintenance for yourself and others for as many years as I have, I’m ok having someone else do it.
I’m sure I can find plenty of manly things to do that does not include home maintenance.

I could never afford to "call the guy" until about the last 12-15 years; before that I fixed EVERYTHING from replacing screens to tuning up the oil furnace to fixing the dishwasher motor. I still do most things but some home repairs I absolutely "call the guy".

I always did most things myself too but now I need work done in the crawl space that has no partitions between the 4 units and is a sand floor and 2 feet of space....I have been under there before and took care of a lot but I think at this point in my life....I going to find a guy to call.

Define how much he can do for himself.. because I know some awfully good men who would out measure you but don’t change their own oil or know how to build a house..

My son actually is a rocket scientist, and got his valuable experience fixing stuff and modifying stuff from me. It sets him apart from his peers. He recently installed heated tile floors in all three of his bathrooms, and new LV flooring on the main level.

Continue your list.

True story.. I had quite a few engineering students work for me over the years and several who stuck it out all 4 years so I took them to the Indy 500 for their graduation gift. They said they wanted to ride motorcycles up there , from Oklahoma , and we did. One kid had an older Suzuki cruiser that was carbureted and on the way up it was sputtering a bit but we made it, on the way home it just wouldn’t run hardly at all. We stopped over at big travel stop area for the night and in the morning we filled up and it wouldn’t start back up. We got it pushed to the side and those smart dudes could only think of one thing to do, and that was to tear down that carb I looked at them and laughed and asked if they had even thought about googling the issue and they looked at me like I was nuts, I had already pulled up a video on YouTube that described the issue perfectly and all it was was clogged up vacuum tubes .. 5 minutes later we were on the road. They’re all extremely successful today in their fields thanks to my leadership and school of common sense..

You finally looked it up.

I've never used it to denigrate God's Chosen People, and never will.

But Himey wirks great with the first two letters of your handle, and (dingbat) describes you nicely, so Himey suits you to a T.

You will forever be Himey to me, Himey.
