Default And if yesterday's stupidity wasn't enough....

I wake up this morning to see that it is raining in our laundry room. Specifically from the light fixture and the hvac vent. I didn't even know we had pipes in the attic

That's gotta suck. And could be expensive.

I've shut the water off, and we have a home warranty. I called them and they are supposedly sending someone out. My deductible is $100 so it should be covered.

We don't live somewhere where them freezing is an issue and you can't see any in the attic for the insulation

All the warranty is going to do is fix the pipe, depending on the drywall flange you may need to call your home insurance too.

The drywall is still dry as of now. I think it will be fine. Unless they drag their feet and I have to turn the water back on for showers, laundry, etc.

One benefit of a crawlspace. THough if you get a leak there, you still have to worry about mold. We had a hairline crack in some pipe and it was spraying up into the joists. Seriously destroyed the subfloor. Had to pull that (and the carpet above) out and replace. Took the time to put in new joists and joist hangers to avoid drying out the wood - just went with new.

My wife and I tiled that room.

I feel your pain. Any way to turn off the water, cut the pipe and just cap it for now or is it something you have to have working right now?

I'm pretty sure it feeds the kitchen.

About 25 years ago a good friend of mine had moved into a really nice house (for a couple in their early 30's.) There was a laundry and small bathroom off the kitchen, you opened the door to get to the laundry room, and then another door in the laundry room to the 1/2 bath (sink/toilet.) I had used the bathroom and came back out and told my friend "The floor in your laundry room feels really springy, have you noticed that?" He asked me to show him and I said "Right here." Basically in front of the dryer. He said it felt fine to him and I said "Maybe you don't weigh enough. Let me show you." I moved to the spot and just sorta stamped my right foot down. My foot went right through the floor.

I was a bit mortified but then on further inspection the plywood was wet and mushy. Turns out that his dryer vent connection came undone or perhaps was never in place correctly and they had been blowing wet moist air into their tight crawl space for a couple years. Fortunately it didn't do much damage to the rest of the house, just those two small rooms. I helped him rip the floors up and holy crap was there black mold everywhere, and two joists were beyond repair and had to be replaced. Ended up being a nightmare to fix.

Keep in mind that even if they drywall dries completely, you still have to replace any insulation up there, if there is any.

Blown-in paper type is now oatmeal, fiber glas will stay wet and create mold in surrounding areas, and even Roxul needs to be removed to dry out although I doubt that's in there.

Most of the insulation was above the pipe. I just dripped down in one spot and found the two openings. Total amount of water I took out of the laundry room was probably a gallon. It's all fixed now.

I'd say WHEW !!! Lucky you were there to nip it in the bud and call it a win.
Let it dry, prime it with Zin and repaint it. Call it a day

Hell there's no wet spots on the Sheetrock! It all came out the light fixture and AC vent.
