Default To Sleep, Perchance to Dream: Mother awakens after delivering baby while comatose

Mother awakens after delivering baby while comatose
New mother heads for physical therapy

UPDATED 10:59 AM CDT Jun 30, 2012

NEW ORLEANS - A Northshore mother who fell into a coma and had her baby delivered by emergency Caesarian section has awakened.

"We got (to the hospital) about 6:45. Adeline was delivered about 8:22. Right after that, they went into surgery to remove the blood clot from her brain," husband Tommy Scott said.

Scott said his wife, Amber, has yet to hold newborn Adeline, but she is getting closer.

"She wants to see more. You can tell. She actually tries to move the pictures herself on the iPhone. She actually tries to scroll over herself the pictures. Every time I ask her, 'Do you want to see a picture?' (It's) thumbs up for yes. It's a strong thumbs up," Scott said.

"Her sister actually found that out. She brought her phone in, and she had pictures of the baby, and Amber was able to take two fingers and scroll through the phone and look at pictures of Adeline on the phone," speech therapist Leah Harris said.

Scott said family members will help take care of Adeline until his wife gets better. On Friday, Amber headed for physical therapy, where she will practice holding a baby.

"Because that's what she'll be doing when she goes home, so they just want to get her to do that. Hopefully, with the movement of her right hand and right leg, she'll be able to start doing things like that," physical therapist Kay Nelson said.

"We'll start doing some procedures for babies, practice feeding the babies, holding the babies, and the goal is to get Adeline as soon as possible," Scott said.

The family is thankful for the community support and the support from the employees at West Jefferson Hospital, Scott said.

"The nurses, the doctors, go above and beyond for us. We couldn't ask for a better situation," Scott said. "I get emotional just thinking about it. Honestly, I mean, it's crazy just the amount of people who want to help me, and help our family."
