Default question about arthritis

I know most of you folks are young and don't have to worry about that. I do know that there are a few geezers such as myself here that may have suffered from arthritis.

I went to a doctor about that once and he said, yeah, I think some of pain you are experiencing is arthritis. I don't think he prescribed anything. The pain has gotten a little worse over the last couple of years.

first question is there really any reason to visit with a doctor. I mean, will he or she just say, yep you got it.

I take one alieve a day and two to three astaxanthins. That helps.

Aside from going to a doctor, what could I be doing. I see some over the counter medicines that are not anti inflammatory drugs that is available.

I don't want to take steroid shots.

It is not debilitating, just slows me down a lot more.

What do you guys do.

People of all ages get arthritis it's not just a old folk thing. That being said. Go to your doctor or a Rheumatologist and request blood tests for arthritis so they can see if you have it and how badly and can give you the correct meds to hopefully help.

At 76 I feel I am qualified to answer that question. If it is just discomfort or stiffness when you first get up, live with it. Naproxen work best for me(ALeve). Normally 1000 mg per day. If you have swelling, heat redness or are loosing range of motion and flexibility you should probably consult a doctor for stronger medication. Getting old is not for the faint of heart. LOL However it does beat the alternative.

I am deathly allergic to Sodium Neproxyn.....ALEVE, wife takes it sometimes, but it put me in the hospital one weekend when it was a doc's prescription, back in the later 80's.....

Doc has me on ibuprofen 600 mg tabs....one with coffee in am, and one in evening.....take it with my pee pill Doxazosin, for the hell of it, I toss in a Glucosamine 2000mg tab to finish off the cocktail with....AND it's the best I have felt in years now.....

I remember my son was born 4/84 and I started with wrist pains the following November, not so very long after being snipped, except for my lo back/spine mess, I never had any arthritic pains.....for some reason or other, my wrists have not hurt at all over the years....every other joint is terminal from toes to nose.....

Thanks to all. I can only take one kind of anti inflammatory medicine because of microscopic colitis. I think I take aleve. At one time, I took 800 mg of Ibuprofen three times a day for sciatica. That can be a problem every once in a while but not much.

I am going to mention to my gp the next visit that I am considering trying glucosamine. I don't take a "pee" medicine but I take a viagra three times a day so I will time that with the glucosamine.

Thanks for the responses.

Gene, I have a question I am sending a pm.

That may be the problem.....having wood all the time may be putting stress on all of your joints.

For about 2-3 weeks in there the Doc's scrip for Aleve worked like a charm, then I developed MEGA arthritis all over, and about passed out from muscle aches too, my GP tossed my ass into the hospital with nothing but an aspirin tab twice a day for 3 days......I never went back to the arthritis doc....but attacks down here in the last couple/few years drove me back to my GP down here.....hence the ibuprofen....
