Default We Had it Rougher When I was a Kid

Children Cross the River Using Pulleys on Their Way to School, 1959, Italy

My reply:

When I was young, we didn't have no fancy schmancy pulleys to cross the river on the way to school. We had to swim across, even in winter, clenching our bookstraps and lunch pails between our teeth. And we liked it!

No water in play along my school routes, BUT, after school we swam in nearby rock (dredging) pits.
Those pits were big, many over 40 feet deep, many had gators in them as were extensiion of original lakes and canals.
Never thought once about the gators, and we also climbed shitty, weak pine trees at the shores, wood peg steps in trees were unsafe, and going up to the top, 20+ feet, standing on a small slippery piece of plywood with soaking wet feet was dumbarse, but we did it all, including building ramps to launch our bmx bikes into the lakes, too stupid to realize the bike would require a re-greasing the next day.

Yep, those were the days!!

We swam in "sand pits" weekly, about the same situation, we also played a "pick up" soccer game on the frozen river each winter and stood up on the swings in the park and cranked them until we were horizontal at the peak When Mom slammed on the car's brakes we all tumbled around in the back seat and had a whale of a time and we all made it through to adulthood.

My father was coming home from school one day back in the 1920's. He was 8-9 then. A car screams to a stop next to him and someone says "Kid get down". He hit the ground and they opened up with tommy guns on a guy coming out of a barber shop.

He never told this story to anyone until the late 80's when the last of the guys doing the shooting was killed.

Based on the stories I was told, you can't be sure if they are on their way TO school or on their way HOME.
