My step sister was bipolar, as well. Diagnosed as a teenager (back when they used to call it manic depressive.) She passed away a few years ago at the age of 53. Heart attack. Sadly, it happened after she had gotten her life back together and had maintained sobriety for two years. Anyhow, I agree with what you’ve said with regard to recognizing that someone is already around the bend. Based on personal experience, I would also add these behaviors: Lack of humility. Lack of remorse in the face of causing obvious and profound damage to relationships. Manipulative behavior that is solely focused on self-preservation and gratification…even when it is apparent that it is impacting others negatively.

Note that my step sister’s mental illness did not preclude her from knowing right from wrong. She was aware of right from wrong. It did cause apathy, though, so right and wrong was a moot point.

I wish Doug well. He should have stayed in the treatment facility for longer. I hope he is actively involved in some sort of outpatient care.

I PM'ed Doug years ago about depression at the other forum. My heart went out to him. Depression is a tough battle to go through with. The man is a hurting dude. I know he has faith in God, maybe why he is still around. A lot of his posts are a way of crying out for help. He can be annoying but deep down he is hurting. Sometimes we need to show some compassion since we're not fighting the demons he is. Just an opinion.

I remember Doug from way back over there. He wore his religion on his sleeve, talked about personal things with the occasional girl he would date. I grew tired of it and did not read his post after awhile. I was surprised to see he is having these problems.

Depression is a horrible affliction. I would love to see Doug overcome it. One generally can't overcome it by ones self. Hope he gets the effective help he needs.
