So I ordered the steel beams from a place in Hickory, a 62 mile trip. They quoted me $1100 for the four beams. Why so high? They get them in 40' lengths, cut to length, then give you what's left. Since I have no use for the remainder, that would have been a huge waste.
So I redesigned the project using four lengths of the same steel section, completely using up one 40' piece. New quote is $700, or $1.43/ pound. |

I'm rebuilding the deck where the spa sits.
When I originally designed the deck it has a sloped floor, 1/4" per foot to facilitate drainage from accumulated snow. Also 2x8 joists. When I put the spa in I doubled-up on the joists then shimmed the floor to get the spa level. It was OK for ten years until the spa started to leak. That saturated the joists, weakening them and causing the deck to sag. For the rebuild I'm using four steel beams to reduce deflection to a very minimal amount. Code floor deflections are L/360 and this will be about half of that. I'll re-use the 2x8s, flat, and span over the beams. |

Are you replacing the spa or eliminating it? My uncle built one 50 years ago in CT out of an old wine barrel. It lasted for about 40 years, was outside. The fiberglas and plastic ones seem to turn to shit in 6-10 years. If it were me, I'd forego the spa entirely.

What don't you understand here? I ordered a new spa from a dealer. The deal includes having them remove the old one, and installing the new one in its place.

I bet the price of the new spa would have been less if they didn't have to factor in the cost of hauling off and disposing of the old one. Just spitballing here.

Not so much. We discussed price, then I asked about removal, and the price didn't change. Once they have a crew and crane at the site, it will take them ten more minutes to remove the old one.
