I liked the Idea of the Volt, but they got the whole thing wrong. It should have been all electric and that small engine up front should have been used solely as a generator. Think about how the diesel trains are set up. All electric driving them, but the deisels are there only to power the generators. When the battery gets low, then that motor fires up to put on a charge and keep you going until the battery is back to 90% or more. Seems like that would make more sense than hoping you can get to a charging station and then waiting for however long it takes to recharge. Save that for when yo get to the house or if you have EV charging int he parking lot like Disney does.

We're still running on the original charge from the dealership, so I have no firsthand experience on the real-world range. Battery/motor warranty is 10 years.

This is exactly what the Volt is. I've had one since 2014. The gas engine continually charges the battery and you use the electric just generated into the battery for propulsion. The real world range is about 350+ miles. Then you fill up the gas tank/generator again.

What's the plan for charging? You going to rig up a 220V charger in your garage for overnight?

Wait, what? then why is there some form of direct drive off of the engine? that's what finally turned me off from the car. Well, that and GM discontinuing it.

Don't listen to the haters - SoCal is still nice. Yes, it has problems, but the positives still outweigh the negatives.
