Default Post your Remember when . . . [computer geek]

Remember when you could punch a notch in a 5 1/4" floppy to make it double-sided!

I remember my dad's old IBM computer in the basement that had 20MB ram and took 5 1/4" floppy disks to boot up...

Remember Atari!? Still got one in a box somewhere my parents gave us as kids to play!

Apple II I remember using it in the 7th Grade--

The first Apple II computers went on sale on June 5, 1977[7] with a MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor running at 1 MHz, 4 kB of RAM, an audio cassette interface for loading programs and storing data, and the Integer BASIC programming language built into the ROMs. The video controller displayed 24 lines by 40 columns of monochrome, upper-case-only text on the screen, with NTSC composite video output suitable for display on a TV monitor, or on a regular TV set by way of a separate RF modulator. The original retail price of the computer was US$1298[8] (with 4 kB of RAM) and US$2638 (with the maximum 48 kB of RAM). To reflect the computer's color graphics capability, the Apple logo on the casing was represented using rainbow stripes,[9] which remained a part of Apple's corporate logo until early 1998. The earliest Apple II's were assembled in Silicon Valley, and later in Texas;[10] printed circuit boards were manufactured in Ireland and Singapore.

This is a 1GB IBM hard drive from about 20 years ago. Wow how technology has evolved! Do you think that the engineers of the day would guess that today we would have more than a hundred times that storage in your pocket which also by the way has a color screen, battery and the smarts to make it play audio and video?

It'e really amazing how computers etc. have evolved. I remember watching commercials for Prodigy (one of the first ISPs) and not having a clue what the internet was or did. I rememebr trying to pay A10-attack Tank Killer and having to upload like 15 5" floppys just to get it to start.

I had to use these throughout my schooling!

And sometimes I even had to go to one of these places!

Remember when people used to do things for themselves and go to the Library and do research from books instead of using a computer.

Haha... yeah I remember when a "report" consisted of looking up the subject in the Encyclopedia and paraphrasing it all. Not sure how anyone did real research before the advent of the internet.

I also remember having to type my report on my electric Brother, complete with white-out strip!

I wish I had a picture of my first computer. It was the TI 99. I plugged in a cassette tape play and used a small black and white TV as the monitor.
Remember when a 20 meg hard drive was more than you would ever need, at least that is what we thought.
