No train tracks on that bridge, but OK, sure, Jan.
Maybe he was making choo-choo sounds when he drove his vette loaded with classified docs over it. Understandable confusion.

I bet that he has never been on that bridge. And I can almost guarantee that if he had he was not driving.

As 30 year retired MM Captain this accounting by Capt. Klaus Luhta is dead on. The idea that tugs would have helped is wrong once the vessel leaves birth it has to be underway makingway on it's own in order to maneuver. In my opinion after watching the video several times and speaking to other retired Masters, the cloud of heavy black smoke was the last ditch effort to move the vessel to the full astern (reverse) attitude. To address a couple other comments, the vessel would have been under the command of the harbor pilot with the master at his side at the helm. Harbor pilots are very experienced in their profession and very well compensated. As for stopping it, it doesn't have Brembo brakes so it wont stop on a dime. A ship of that size, at speed will take up to a mile to come to rest.

Terrible for all involved and horrible loss of life.

I watch a lot of disaster shows. This is not the first time a ship or barge has hit a bridge pylon and cause a collapse. Two come to mind. One in Tampa and the other I think was New Orleans.

Both case the pylon was not protected in any way if a ship should run away. Now there are barriers to keep this from happening.

If our NTSB was any good even after the first time this happened, YEARS AGO, all bridges that have large ships or barges crossing under them, these bridges should have BARRIERS IN PLACE ALREADY to prevent this from happening.

This was highly preventable.

I don't think that there are any shortage of rocks. That is, unless you are in Floriduh.

If only FedCo was interested in protecting what has been built instead of obtaining voters from foreign countries.

After the bridge is rebuilt, after the memorials are all complete, after a plaque is put in place, after we celebrate a few anniversaries of the event, after tons of money is thrown at the problem...

It will become law that all air horns must have a battery back up.

That is how ineffective government solutions are.

Boat took a HARD starboard move. Here's the track. from https://www.marinetraffic.com You can actually play it back on the site, and it's scary how far off it got so quickly.

Because stopping a 90,000 ton ship going 9 mph is easy.

Their latest is "highly trained local crew".

OK guys, this is what I'm hearing...

DJT was taking TS onto the NASDAQ. DOJ op. They are willing to destroy the economy with uncertainty about the US trading capability with a major port f'ed over. Drops the market in a large way, thus erasing some of DJT's paper value, which is better for the squeeze. Summer gotcha will be that Ukrainian Intelligence told the US Barron was driving and planning to heist the goods and head to Russia.

That's just what I'm hearing

I would guess without rudder control, the speed of the vessel and the current put the rudder in some odd rest position. On a smaller scale, my ski boat outdrive wanted to be in a hard right if floating/drifting.

The village idiot at work said " the captain should have just dropped the anchor "

Since I don't know exact water depth, lets just use 70' water depth ( figuring 60' running depth plus 10' clearance.

A 5:1 scope ( ratio of water depth to anchor line) would be absolute minimum and a 7:1 would be better.

So that would call for anywhere from 350' to 490' of anchor line. Once that drops, then you have the ship that is 984' in length that has to change from forward momentum to bow towards anchor while the stern swings around AND then the anchor must dig in to stop the loaded ship.

It is not going to stop on a dime and give you change.

Considering that they went from close to "oh shit" in a couple of ship lengths, that was not a viable option.

The conspiracy theories that have been voiced are quite entertaining. Some of them are :

The ship was "hacked" causing loss of control

Baltimore harbor is a known hub for sex trafficking. This brings attention to that.

The workers were actually compromising the structural strength of the bridge allowing the ship to bring it down by a Taiwanese / Chinese ship( )

Those were just a couple of the more entertaining ones .....
