The thing is, at least around here, you don't see them coming like that. You're relying on the tornado sirens and radar. Hell, my brother-in-law was mowing his yard when the Joplin tornado hit. It came and went and he didn't know it. He just knew that it was really raining hard just to his north. He lives about 9 blocks south of the 3/4 mile-wide path it carved out. He would have at least heard it if he wasn't wearing headphones while mowing.

I grew up in the Texas panhandle. We used to climb up on the roof and watch them coming in. Normally they would dissipate before doing damage. Trust me, they would just throw the rocks back. |

I grew up in Tornado Alley, Kansas City area. Never saw one once. Saw the aftermath of a few, but I never actually saw a Tornado. My mother witnessed the Ruskin Heights Tornado in the late 50's or early 60's, can't remember. That one was an F5 I believe.
My dad had a tornado shelter installed in his garage, I'm not exactly sure what the details are behind it, but it wasn't cheap...I think his wife insisted on it (my step mom) after the Joplin thing.

Visited our Daughter recently who lives on the Iowa/Nebraska boarder outside Omaha, and although it is unlikely but it is Tornado season. My wife was concerned.
So I asked my daughter "Surely the hotel is tornado proof right?" Her reply was, "Just get in the bathtub and put a mattress over you"

That actually works. When you hit the ground 99 Xs out of a hundred a mattress is still on top of you when they find your body. And sometimes you are still in the tub and just can toss the mattress aside and walk back to what is left of the hotel.
